In today's devotional, we conclude reading the part of Jesus' ministry that takes place in Galilee. Jesus concludes by reminding his listeners about the cost of following him. "As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
Luke 9:57-62 NIV. Making a commitment is easy, keeping it is something else. You would agree with me that some of the requests by those who claimed they wanted to follow seemed tenable, but let's look again. For the first man, Jesus seemed to be saying; following me means you can't personally control what you want. Everyone else has a place to sleep but the Son of man goes where the Spirit leads him and tomorrow, we could easily be staying in the desert. The second man said; Lord, first let me go bury my father. A good excuse, however, what was he even doing there, he should be in mourning. It seems Jesus is saying, if you choose to sign up despite the fact you lost someone, good, but you can't then turn around and site them as excuse of why you can't be available for deployment. The last person says; I will follow you, Lord; BUT....anytime you add a BUT to your commitment, you guarantee you won't keep it.
