David mourns for Saul and Jonathan. Although he is immediately anointed king over Judah, he begins a seven year journey to becoming king over the entire nation of Israel. If God says it, it will come to pass.

Saul and David were both facing impossible situations. Chapter 30, David arrives home and everything, including everyone and his 2 wives had either been destroyed or captured. His own men even thought of attacking him. What did David do? He encourages himself and ask God what to do. Chapter 31; Saul, having been informed he was going to lose this battle along with his 3 sons commits suicide before the enemy can finish him off. When faced with an impossible choice, what will you do? Choose God, choose hope instead of despair and giving up.

Saul finds himself in a bind, all out had broken out against the Philistines army and for the first time, he is without help from Samuel or God. He elects to consult a medium to speak to Samuel, not God. Probably he felt he could persuade Samuel to hear him and plead with God on his behalf. The lesson here is, if you fail to hear God in the little things, if you fail to cultivate a relationship with Him when everything is normal, you won't be able to hear God in the difficult times. It is those who are faithful in the small and little things that find they have the extra they need to be faithful in the big things. Spend some time talking with God today.

David gets a second chance to take Saul's life and become king immediately but he refuses and instead chose to wait on God's timing. Can you wait on God like David here when everything and everyone is screaming, take it?

What will you do if it seems the LORD has delivered your enemies on a platter, one strike now and you would be rid of this challenge forever? Hurray I guess. For David, the question always was, LORD, what should I do? David would rather please God than be right. Big lessons!

Despite all of Saul's effort, he is unable to get David. In his desperation, he tries to kill even his own son, and then, he commits an unpardonable sin by killing the priests he felt conspired against him.

When God is fighting for you, he causes even your enemies to hold their peace and people who shouldn't, to favour you. However Saul tried, he just could not succeed to kill David.

David takes on Goliath and defeats him. David reasons that God was on his side against Goliath and his gods. Goliath might represent anything intimidating for you, but if you will just remember that God is on your side, you will overcome.

God rejects king Saul and in his place anoint a humble and brave boy, David.

Saul's story is an example of pride going before destruction and a haughty before a fall. One mistake after another, his weaknesses and a lack of self esteem and trust in God were evident for all to see. I wonder why he never noticed himself. Lord, help me overcome my weaknesses.
