In the spring of 1992, Los Angeles became the epicenter of a national crisis. The city erupted in violence after the acquittal of four LAPD officers in the brutal beating of Rodney King—a moment that many saw as a tipping point after decades of racial tension, economic disparity, and growing distrust in law enforcement. What followed was one of the most destructive civil disturbances in U.S. history, spanning six days, claiming more than 60 lives, and leaving over a billion dollars in damage.

Public Awareness Campaign in Houston: A month-long initiative launched in collaboration with federal agencies to educate the public about the legal consequences of unlawful firearm purchases.
ATF Policy Reforms: The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) announced a shift towards greater transparency and accountability, including the end of the "Zero Tolerance" policy and the introduction of a new Administrative Action Policy focusing on public safety and reducing minor paperwork infractions.
Settlement on Forced-Reset Triggers: The Department of Justice reached a settlement with Rare Breed Triggers, resolving litigation over the classification of forced-reset triggers. The agreement includes the return of previously seized devices.
Gun Storage Check Week: An upcoming campaign from June 1 to June 7 aimed at encouraging firearm owners to assess and improve their gun storage practices to prevent accidents, suicides, and thefts.
Smith & Wesson is one of the oldest and most influential firearm manufacturers in the United States. From the volatile decades before the Civil War to today’s modern polymer-framed handguns, the company’s history is a mirror of American industrial ingenuity, military adaptation, and civilian self-defense philosophy

On June 5, 2025, the United States Supreme Court issued a clear and decisive ruling in a closely watched case—Mexico v. Smith & Wesson, part of a broader $10 billion lawsuit brought by the Mexican government against several American firearm manufacturers. The decision was 9–0, with Justice Elena Kagan writing the opinion for the unanimous Court. This ruling reaffirms protections granted under the 2005 Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), and rejects attempts to hold manufacturers civilly liable for criminal misuse of firearms in foreign nations

The Hearing Protection Act (HPA) is advancing as part of a broader budget reconciliation package. This legislation would remove suppressors from the National Firearms Act (NFA), ending the federal tax stamp, lengthy wait times, and registration process currently required for ownership.

Firearms Legislation and Community Engagement Update – May 2025
This month brings several key developments related to firearm policy, safety education, and community engagement:
Honoring Law Enforcement During National Police Week
May marks the 63rd observance of National Police Week, with nationwide events paying tribute to fallen officers and recognizing the service of active-duty law enforcement. The Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service was held on May 15, and a 5K race in Arlington, Virginia brought together law enforcement personnel, their families, and supporters to promote public safety and community unity.
Proposed Elimination of Suppressor Tax
A new proposal from the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee seeks to remove the $200 federal tax on suppressor purchases. While this change would reduce financial barriers, all other requirements—such as background checks, fingerprinting, and submission of ATF Form 4—would remain in place. The proposal is part of a broader effort to reclassify suppressors and streamline legal access.
Bipartisan Support at the Congressional Clays Competition
The annual Congressional Clays Competition saw participation from lawmakers across the political spectrum. The event served as an opportunity to build relationships, promote outdoor recreation, and encourage collaborative efforts on conservation and sporting policy.
Increase in Firearm Ownership Among Women
Recent data shows a continued rise in firearm ownership among women, growing from 15% in 2007 to 20% between 2019 and 2024. Educational programs offering training in firearm safety and handling have helped support this trend, reflecting a broader interest in personal protection and responsible ownership.
Focus on Secure Storage and Community Programs
Ongoing initiatives continue to emphasize safe firearm storage and educational outreach, especially in partnership with law enforcement and local communities. These efforts aim to reduce accidents, support youth education, and encourage responsible ownership practices.
As the landscape continues to evolve, efforts remain focused on protecting rights, improving public safety, and fostering cooperation among lawmakers, communities, and firearm owners.
In a disappointing but not entirely unexpected move, the U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear two significant Second Amendment cases challenging bans on AR-15 rifles and standard-capacity magazines. These denials mean that lower court rulings upholding restrictive firearm laws in Maryland and Rhode Island will stand—for now.
