The freed prisoners include Khalida Jarrar, a politician and leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) in the occupied West Bank. Jarrar was in solitary confinement for months in a suffocating 2 by 1.5 metre cell that human rights groups compared to a tomb. She's been in and out of Israeli prisons for years because of her membership of a group that Israel considers to be illegal.

Yuli Novak is an Israeli political activist and human rights defender. For five years, Novak led Breaking the Silence, an Israeli organisation which uses anonymous testimonies from ex-soldiers to reveal the crimes committed by the Israeli military. Mustafa Barghouti, the secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, has told Al Jazeera that the only solution for the future of Gaza is "national unity".
