Israel is likely banning UNRWA as it blames the agency for allowing Palestinians to claim their right of return, says Yossi Mekelberg, an associate fellow of the MENA Programme at Chatham House. With its existence, “many Palestinians [retain] their refugee status, and as a result of it, the right of return [to their towns and villages of origin in historical Palestine],”, “But the reality is, the simple truth, the fact that UNRWA is still needed, is a testimony to the failure of the politicians [to] bring this conflict to an end … [through] a peaceful solution based on the two-state solution,” he added.
