In the last few hours there's been relative calm in both Indian and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Since Wednesday more than 60 people have been killed.

The internationally mediated agreement is meant to stop a dangerous escalation in fighting between the two countries -- which has killed more than 60 people since Wednesday. Explosions have been reported in several cities across Indian-administered Kashmir. India's Foreign Secretary has called on Pakistan to stop the violations and says Indian armed forces are responding. Pakistan has not yet commented.

This is a moment of the United States stepping in and claiming a more direct mediatory role than in other confrontations between India and Pakistan, says Elizabeth Threlkeld, director of the South Asia programme at the Stimson Center. “I think it’s important to recognise that the ceasefire was no sure thing, particularly as things escalated quite significantly in the past 24 hours. This was arguably the most serious crisis between the two sides since they got nuclear weapons,” she told Al Jazeera from Washington, DC.

Ukrainian and European leaders meeting in Kyiv have jointly called for an immediate and unconditional 30-day ceasefire to end the war. Leaders from Ukraine, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Poland are urging the truce to begin on May 12. The proposal also has the support of US President Donald Trump, who joined the talks via phone. The group warned of ‘massive’ sanctions against Russia if it refuses to comply.
