  • Women and girls ‘suffer triply’ in Gaza: UN
Women and girls in Gaza “suffer triply”, says the UN Population Fund regional director for Arab states, Laila Baker. “They suffer with their own health – with many of the health facilities and the infrastructure almost completely brought to a halt, … with medication and supplies being denied. Their malnutrition is also at risk, and they also are the caretakers for their families, so they put their own health and wellbeing aside,” Baker told Al Jazeera from Cairo, Egypt. She said pregnant women are finding it difficult to find a medical facility as well as safe access to it due to Israeli attacks. “Even if they could get there, would there be a professional? Will there be aid? Will there be medication? Can they get back to their place, a tent, a displacement centre, safely? … Will that newborn actually survive the conditions in Gaza with food, water, shelter being in such limited supplies?” Baker asked. Still, the women and girls she has spoken to in the besieged enclave have “tenacity” and “commitment”, Baker said. “What I got from those women was … that they were proud to be Palestinian women and to live in their country and to remain, to be able to be steadfast and remain on the Palestinian land.”

  • Atrocities and starvation grip Darfur as Sudan’s war enters third year
Sudan’s two-year war, a power struggle between the army and the paramilitary RSF, has triggered the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, displacing 13 million people. In Darfur, an RSF siege has blocked aid for over a year, starving hundreds of thousands as villages face systematic burning and looting. Atrocities—including mass killings, sexual violence, and ethnic attacks—likely amount to crimes against humanity, although the RSF denies targeting civilians. Survivors recount harrowing escapes without any aid, while markets and infrastructure are deliberately destroyed to weaponise hunger. The besieged regional capital endures compounded threats of starvation and violence. Despite international warnings, abuses persist unchecked, leaving displaced populations in perpetual peril. With no resolution in sight, the conflict’s catastrophic human toll deepens.

  • Hamas’s options are shrinking, as Israel torments Gaza: Marwan Bishara
The Palestinian group has now issued an official statement with its position on the latest Gaza ceasefire proposal after a senior Hamas official told Al Jazeera that the group had rejected any clauses that would see it forced to disarm. Hamas said that its leadership was “studying, with great national responsibility, the proposal it received from the mediating brothers, and will submit its response to it as soon as possible”. “The movement reiterates its firm position that any future agreement must achieve a permanent ceasefire, a complete withdrawal of occupation forces from the Gaza Strip, a genuine prisoner exchange deal, the start of a serious process to rebuild what the occupation [Israel] has destroyed, and the lifting of the unjust siege on our people in the Gaza Strip,” the statement added.
