The UN is warning South Sudan is on the brink of "widespread conflict" as reports emerge the Vice President Riek Machar has been arrested. A statement from his political party says a convoy of heavily armed vehicles carrying the defence minister and chief of national security entered his residence in Juba. Machar was arrested on unknown charges. The party calls it unconstitutional and a breach of a 2018 peace deal.

'Damage control' is how many are describing the Trump administration's handling of a leak of highly sensitive information. Eighteen senior officials -- including the CIA director, the defence secretary, the national security adviser and the vice president -- were part of an online group chat that's gone viral. An American journalist was also on that chat -- and was made privy to US plans to strike Houthi positions in Yemen – before they happened. The breach is raising questions about the handling of military intelligence and top-secret information. So, will there be consequences beyond Washington? And how will long-time allies in Europe respond to being criticised in the chat?

Sudan's military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has declared the capital 'free' after returning to the presidential palace in Khartoum. Burhan's forces have made major gains against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in recent days. Earlier they regained control of Khartoum's airport and a weapons manufacturing centre.

War is looming once again in Tigray, a northern region of Ethiopia near the border with Eritrea. Political disputes are fragmenting the regional government and sparking warnings of a new crisis. Tigray has not yet recovered from a devastating war that ended in 2022. With aid cuts now worsening hunger and uncertainty, is it on the brink of another catastrophic conflict?

The Israeli prime minister’s repeated threat of seizing territory in Gaza if Hamas fails to release the captives is a sign of “desperation” rather than an indication of an imminent plan to invade the enclave, according to Israeli political commentator Ori Goldberg. “Netanyahu is desperate on many fronts,” Goldberg told Al Jazeera. “The Americans are not in a rush to provide a green light and there are a lot of fears among Israel’s top brass that the tens of thousands of soldiers needed to carry this out will not materialise when the time comes.” Goldberg said Netanyahu was “besieged domestically” by widespread popular protests, especially after approving a controversial state budget and repeated attempts to pass judicial reforms. “I doubt Netanyahu sees this as the right time for a significant Israeli move,” the analyst added. “He’s talking the talk, but I very much doubt that he has the resources, the energy and the political capital both domestically and in [Washington] DC to walk the walk.”

The Sudanese army has retaken the main international airport in Khartoum. They've also taken over the Yarmouk military complex, that's the largest weapons manufacturing plant in the country. Last week, the army claimed control of the presidential palace.

The United Nations says more than 142,000 Palestinians were displaced in the first five days after Israel resumed its bombardment of the Gaza Strip. Some of the latest forced evacuation orders were issued to Palestinians in Jabalia in the north. Families are fleeing areas they had only recently returned to during the two-month-long ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Many are heading to areas that Israel previously declared humanitarian zones. However, the army has repeatedly attacked those so-called evacuation areas

Houthi-affiliated media are reporting more US attacks in the northwest Yemen. They say 17 air strikes targeted the Saada province near the border with Saudi Arabia. Houthi fighters have been targeting ships linked to Israel and its allies in the Red Sea. They say it's in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

US President Donald Trump holds a meeting with US ambassadors in the White House cabinet room. Trump was asked if anyone would be fired as a result of a journalist being inadvertently added to a group chat with top administration officials discussing a military operation in Yemen. "We've pretty much looked into it. It's pretty simple, to be honest," Trump said. "It's not -- it's just something that can happen. It can happen."

Oscar-winning Palestinian filmmaker, Hamdan Ballal, has been released from Israeli custody. Ballal was detained in the occupied West Bank by the Israeli army after a group of masked settlers attacked his house. Settlers also assaulted other activists in the village.
