The US Agency for International Development has officially ceased to exist - more than 60 years after it was founded. Its remaining functions have been transferred to the State Department. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says foreign assistance will now be limited and targeted. President Donald Trump began dismantling the agency soon after taking office in January, as part of his plan to reduce government spending. Thousands of staff were fired and humanitarian aid to some of the world's most vulnerable populations was withdrawn.

Ali Akbar Darieni, a researcher at the Tehran-based Centre for Strategic Studies, told Al Jazeera that Iran remains deeply sceptical of US intentions despite talk of renewed negotiations. He said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed President Trump's claim that talks could begin within days, stressing Iran would only re-engage if assured there would be no further military attacks. While Araghchi insisted diplomacy remains possible, Darieni said past US behaviour makes any guarantees hard to trust.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has led a high-level security meeting, as the US applies pressure to reach a deal in Gaza and secure the release of the captives. Meanwhile, an Israeli court has postponed Netanyahu's scheduled testimony in his long-running corruption trial. His hearings were put off for the next two weeks, after the head of Mossad and the Israeli intelligence chief, cited national security concerns. Just hours earlier, US President Donald Trump called for the case against Netanyahu to be dropped.

The Times of Israel reports the Jerusalem District Court has postponed Netanyahu’s planned testimony in his corruption trial this week after the Israeli prime minister argued “diplomatic and national security issues” need his attention. According to Reuters, the ruling said that new reasons provided by Netanyahu, the head of Israel’s spy agency Mossad and the military intelligence chief justified cancelling the hearings. The decision comes a day after Trump lambasted the trial itself, calling it a “POLITICAL WITCH HUNT” that the US is “not going to stand for”.

The huge crowds gathered for a state funeral in Tehran reflect a renewed sense of patriotism across Iran in the wake of the recent conflict, according to an Iranian researcher. Ali Akbar Dareini of Tehran’s Centre for Strategic Studies told Al Jazeera that the Israeli and American attacks had “reignited that sense of patriotism and nationalism in Iran”.

The White House has said there is now a “new era” in the Middle East region - in which more Gulf and Arab states could sign on to the Abraham Accords. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt made the remarks in her weekly press briefing. She said Washington is now on a diplomatic path with Tehran - but that no meeting between the two has been set.
