President Trump has again restated his plans of turning Gaza into a new Riviera. Where did this idea come from – and how feasible is it?

Eric Witte, a former ICC official and external relations adviser to former ICC president Judge Sang-Hyun Song, has told Al Jazeera from Brussels that “a lot depends on whether the 125 countries that are party to the Rome statute which created the ICC choose to block the worst effects of this action”. “But if they don’t defend the court, [Trump’s] executive order poses an existential threat to the ICC’s ability to function, not just in the situation of Palestine, but in all situations before the court, including Ukraine, Sudan, Afghanistan and others,” he said.

“Death is so quotidian that journalists report it as though they’re reporting the weather” wrote Palestinian poet and author Mohammed El-Kurd amid Israel’s war on Gaza. And with a ceasefire in place, the fate of Palestinians remains uncertain. So what role does the Western gaze play in perpetuating a narrative that dehumanizes Palestinians and how does it shape our understanding of their struggle for justice and liberation?

Hani Mahmoud reports from Gaza, and he says: What we see around us here at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City is just devastation. This used to be the largest public health facility in the Gaza Strip but right now it is completely out of service. And he adds, Al-Shifa was stormed twice, the first time in December 2023, when the Israeli military set fire to the compound and used artillery shells while people were still trapped inside it, many of them were killed, especially those who needed immediate medical care.

Hamas spokesperson Osama Hamdan says Palestinians are determined to secure their rights and will not give up that decades-long quest. “If it was delivered by the international community to them, that will be good. If not, they will resist,” he told Al Jazeera. “After 15 months of Israeli aggression, it is clear that you cannot defeat the Palestinian people. This nation has been struggling for its legitimate rights for over 75 years, and we will not give up.”

Strong winds, rain, and winter conditions are worsening the suffering of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza. Many families are living in worn-out tents after their homes were destroyed in Israel’s bombardment of the coastal enclave. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have returned to northern Gaza since a ceasefire took effect last month, pausing Israel’s 15-month assault. However, most found their homes destroyed or severely damaged. Families continue to struggle to find shelter amid widespread debris and destruction across the besieged enclave.

Rami Khouri, a distinguished fellow at the American University of Beirut, says US President Donald Trump’s proposal to move Palestinians out of Gaza is more about business and personal factors than a clear geopolitical policy. “He says all kinds of things. He changes his mind, he clarifies, he denies. So he’s not a reliable source … even though he is the president of the United States,” Khouri, who is also a nonresident senior fellow at the Arab Center Washington DC, told Al Jazeera. “So what he says has to be considered seriously, but it should not be taken as a clear path towards a policy,” Khouri said. “It has other motives, some business, some personal, some family relationships, some investment opportunities. “So it’s a fascinating study, and sort of kaleidoscopic diplomacy. When you turn it, all the pieces move, and then a new situation comes about. So I think we have to let the process play itself out.”

The spokesperson of Hamas’s armed wing Abu Obeid says Israeli captives Eli Sharabi, Ohad Ben Ami and Or Levy will be freed on Saturday in the latest exchange for Palestinian prisoners under the ceasefire agreement that began last month. Hamas delayed announcing the names after earlier accusing Israel of breaching their ceasefire deal by preventing humanitarian aid from entering Gaza.
