Alas! Since time immemorial, society has looked upon women not as individuals but as means to fulfill selfish desires. She has been seen as food for hunger, an object for pleasure, and fuel for the fire of lust. Society never allowed her to rise; instead, it ruled over her and used her for its own ends.

If today women are criticized in society, in towns, even in scriptures, the root cause lies not within her but in man himself. It is this so-called "civilized" man who has pushed her into helplessness, weakness, and the role of the fallen.

Look around—there is no shortage of prostitutes in the country today. Who created this? Not God. It is the ever-growing demand of lustful men that has forced virtuous women into the marketplace. Money can bend any rule, hunger can compel any act.

The "prostitute" is not God’s creation—it is society’s creation. Imagine how it begins: a poor girl or widow, working in the houses of the wealthy just to earn a meal, becomes a victim of exploitation. A lustful man forces her into motherhood while she is still a child. Society rejects her. Where can she go? Who will marry her? She is left to drift, battered by the world.

For mere scraps of food or clothing, men exploit her body. And what once felt like sin becomes, over time, her livelihood—so much so that relations with strangers may even come to feel like a blessing, because they ensure her survival.

This is the tragic reality: society, through greed and lust, has created what it then condemns.

What if suffering isn’t something to escape, but something to truly see? This episode explores how awareness—not control or discipline—opens the door to freedom and the ecstasy of life.

Krishnamurti: Craving without understanding creates conflict, and to escape from this suffering there is a search for truth, happiness, liberation. So instead of looking for liberation, for truth, let us concern ourselves with that which is more familiar to us - conflict and suffering - with the actuality rather than with illusions which offer us convenient escapes, shelters. So let us concern ourselves with the cause of suffering. The very desire, conscious or unconscious, to avoid suffering, to find a substitute for it and to cultivate its opposite, brings about the lack of comprehension of the present. The many prejudices, limitations, that the mind has built around itself in its search for self-protections, create sorrow when they come into contact with the ever-lasting quality of experience. This suffering is not to be overcome through self-discipline and self-control, but when the mind frees itself from the self-protective limitations and illusions, there is the ECSTASY OF LIFE. This liberation from the false, from the stupid, is not to be realized through self-analysis, but in the awareness of action itself. Self-discipline is but conformity to an established form of escape, an ideal, and in this there is no intelligence. Awareness, that discernment without conformity, without compulsion, reveals the illusions and hindrances which are concealed, preventing the mind from the fullness of action, which alone makes life an eternal becoming.

This episode completes the second Q&A (Question and Answer) after the second talk given by J. Krishnamurti in Ommen, Holland on July 28, 1933. The next episode (Episode 34) will cover the third Q&A from July 28, 1933. 

KRISHNAMURTI: Because one does not meet every incident of life wholly, there arises conflict which creates memory. Mind identifies itself with this suffering, out of which it creates for itself a self-protecting principle, and by this measure all experiences are judged and controlled. It is in suffering only that the mind tries to escape, consciously or unconsciously, TO THE PATTERN, and from this there arises the defensive "I must" and "I must not." If you can discern the cause of fear, which brings forth these self-protective ideals which demand consistency and the rigid following of a discipline, then without the effort of overcoming the fear, the mind will free itself from it. As there is great separation between thought and action, there must be conflict, suffering; and self-discipline is thought necessary to bridge this gulf, to realize completeness. [...] Your attempt to overcome limitations is urged by the desire for reward. So you have not overcome your barrier at all; you have disciplined yourself merely in order to get something else. And because you are thinking of what you will get in return for your action, for your self-discipline, your action and your discipline have no value at all.
