Daily Precap - Monday 30th July 2018
Hey I’m Domm, it’s Monday 30th July 2018, and this is your daily precap of the latest and greatest technology, startups, and business news.
SoftBank, the Japanese investment conglomerate with mega stakes in big names like Alibaba, Uber, Didi Chuxing, WeWork, Slack and SO many more, has partnered with Yahoo Japan (who is another one of its investments) and also with PayTM to launch a QR code-based mobile payment service PayPay.
The service will launch in Japan by November, with no commission fees for 3 years.
The most glaringly stark observations I make on this deal though is:
How is Yahoo still functioning? And are they running on Google cloud?
Why the hell do we keep trying to find a use for QR codes
No matter how much money you have, you will still pick stupid names because all the .coms were taken, I mean PayPay, seriously.
I finally found an Opera worth watching, and it was the web browser company that just listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange. Their stock closed around 10% up on the first day of trading.
The Norweigan founded, now Chinese owned company, raised $115M in the IPO.
Chris Hemsworth is launching a production company, called Thematic Entertainment. It will be based in both Melbourne and Los Angeles.
Although not tech heavy, the venture speaks to the same important outlook needed by all our startups. The companies remit is to develop and produce projects with global appeal.
We must remember that our audience, customers and users are now global.
With the speed of data transfer and communication it is too naiive to be building a product or company for a local audience.
Think Global, act global.
Tesla just released a new product.
A $1500 carbon fibre surfboard.
But don’t get too excited, the limited run of 200 boards sold out before anyone had a chance to bat an eyelid.
The rumour mills are now building about the next Apple iPhones and Google Pixels. Apple next device should be out in September, and Google’s in October.
With rumours like front dual-facing cameras and front facing speakers, I am interested to know what you would want in your next phone, and are you a iPhone or a Pixel person?
