South African police ended a rescue operation at an abandoned gold mine on Wednesday and said they believe they have brought out all the survivors and retrieved all the bodies after hundreds of miners were trapped for months in one of the country’s deepest mines while working illegally.

At least 78 miners were confirmed dead, police said, and 246 survivors had been rescued. The victims were suspected to have died of starvation or dehydration, civic groups said, although no cause of death has been released for any of them.

The death toll is likely higher, as a community group reported retrieving nine bodies before the police operation started. There have also been reports of an unconfirmed number of bodies and survivors being brought out sporadically during other community-led rescue efforts since last year.

The surprise announcement ending the operation came a day after the police minister said it would likely last until at least next week.

Rescuers would do a final sweep of the mine on Thursday, said Maj.-Gen. Patrick Asaneng, the acting police commissioner for North West province.

On its 100th launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket blasted two lunar landers into space early Wednesday morning. 

The pair are two separate spacecraft from two different customers — one made by Texas-based Firefly Aerospace for NASA, the other by private Japanese company ispace. About an hour into the flight, the rocket released them to continue their long solo journeys to the moon.

SpaceX shared videos of each deployment on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter and owned by the rocket company's founder, Elon Musk. Both can be watched below.

Sweden's political parties have agreed that dual citizens who commit crimes that threaten national security should lose their citizenship.

A cross-party committee recommended that the change could be applied to anyone who had used bribes or false information to obtain their citizenship; and also if they committed crimes that were a threat to the state or came under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.

But it stopped short of proposals by the minority government for gangsters to have their citizenship revoked.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer said Sweden was dealing with "violent extremism, state actors acting in a hostile manner towards Sweden, as well as systemic organised crime".

Under Sweden's constitution, revoking citizenship is currently not allowed and a vote will take place next year in parliament on changing the laws.

Centre-left opposition parties say that revoking gang criminals' citizenship would be a step too far, as deciding how to define the law would be difficult. Two opposition parties, the Left and the Greens, said they could not back removing citizenship at all.

However, Sweden's centre-right governing parties, backed by the more radical anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, want the changes to tackle the dramatic rise in gang crime and the high rate of gun killings.

Ivanka Trump has zero plans of returning the White House to help her father run the country during his second administration, bluntly declaring: “I hate politics.”

President-elect Donald Trump’s eldest daughter, who was among his top advisers during his first stint, told the Skinny Confidential’s “Him & Her Show” podcast on Tuesday that she is steering clear of Washington DC this time around.

“I love policy and impact. I hate politics. And unfortunately, the two are not separable,” Ivanka, 43, said, adding it is a “very dark, negative business.”
