The Frustrations with Prayers 7

We’ve been exploring the frustration that people experience in the place of prayer, especially when it seems God isn’t answering. But note this: any prayer God hears, He answers. The issue often lies in what blocks Him from hearing; things like sin, emotional burdens and prayers that are out of line with the will of God.

We usually say, “prayer changes things.” That’s true, but the first thing prayer changes is you. Consider Hannah, before prayer changed her situation, prayer changed her. Her countenance lifted after prayer—even before she conceived. Likewise, if prayer doesn’t transform you, it may not transform your situation. God is more interested in shaping who you become than simply fixing what’s around you. When we don’t understand this dimension to prayer, God can answer and you miss it.

2 Corinthians 12:8–10 (GNB), “Three times I prayed to the Lord about this and asked him to take it away. But His answer was: ‘My grace is all you need, for my power is greatest when you are weak.’ I am most happy, then, to be proud of my weaknesses, in order to feel the protection of Christ’s power over me. I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Paul was praying about a situation and he thought that God didn’t answer him because he was praying that God should change his situation. When God answered, He didn’t change the situation, He gave Paul a revelation that changed his perspective and strengthened him through the situation.

Sometimes when we feel unheard, it may not be that God didn’t answer, you might have missed His answer. You might be asking for a change of situation but He gives you a revelation that the application will change the situation. Settle it in your heart, God is not hold out against you. Examine your life continuously align with the will of God and watch the frustrations in prayers fade away.

The Frustrations With Prayer 2

Many believers face a quiet but real struggle with prayer. Most people will not like to discuss or admit this frustration openly but the truth is that, even the disciples of Jesus experienced this frustration. In Luke 11, they asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray,” not because they didn’t know how to pray, but because their prayers weren’t producing results. They saw Jesus praying with passion, power and getting results, and they wanted to experience the same.

This is a reality for many today. People pray, fast, and cry out to God, yet feel unheard. This is the same feeling Gideon had in Judges 6 when he asked, “If God is with us, why have all these bad things happened?” He, too, was frustrated with prayer and felt abandoned by God.

Prayer, like any communication, can become frustrating when it feels one-sided. Just as we sometimes struggle to communicate with loved ones, we may also struggle to connect with God. But that doesn’t mean He’s distant or uninterested, nor is He the cause of our frustrations.

James 4:1–3 (CEV), Why do you fight and argue with each other? Isn't it because you are full of selfish desires that fight to control your body? 2 You want something you don't have, and you will do anything to get it. You will even kill! But you still cannot get what you want, and you won't get it by fighting and arguing. You should pray for it. 3 Yet even when you do pray, your prayers are not answered, because you pray just for selfish reasons.

The frustrations experienced in the place of prayer is not necessarily because of sin, it could be because of a lack of understanding or wrong motives. God longs to answer us. Jeremiah 33:3, He says, “Call to me and I will answer you...”

So, if you’re feeling stuck in prayer, don’t give up. Ask God to show you what you don’t yet understand. Prayer was never meant to be frustrating—it’s meant to be a place of victory and communion.
