The first rule of worshiping God is that your mind should be clear, calm and happy. God first sees the feelings of the devotee. If you have negative thoughts for someone, then be positive.  While worshiping God, keep in mind the direction as well. Our face should be towards east, north or northeast. Never keep sandalwood in a copper vessel for worship.
