We have a very special guest and thwarter of Aggie dreams on the podcast today in Jaxon Shipley. Jaxon was a big part of the 2011 victory in College Station, as he made several big plays and threw a touchdown pass to Blaine Irby that turned the tide of the game. He walks us through the buildup, the environment, the stakes of that game against Texas A&M and the renewal of the rivalry. Thanksgiving feels right again.

What an episode of the DWWBYa podcast! In honor of the Horns going to Fayetteville this weekend to hopefully break some more pig hearts, I had the privilege of getting to discuss the 1969 National Championship game with Longhorn Legend Tom Campbell. I wrote about this game in oral history form before the 2021 matchup in Fayetteville (hopefully this game is better than Sark’s first trip there). For the article a few years ago, I was able to interview the late Steve Worster and Bill Little among others. I’d encourage you to check it out. Tom was gracious enough to help me with that story as well as my article earlier this season about memories from Red River. Campbell was a defensive back on the 1969 National Championship team and he sealed the game with his late interception. Tom’s twin brother Mike Jr. was also a starter on the tough Longhorn defense and their father Mike Sr. was Darrell Royal’s longtime defensive coordinator.
We talk about the game’s impact 55 years later, James Street becoming friends with Elvis, the buildup to the game, Richard Nixon being there, the slow start and the comeback, plus of course 53 Veer Pass, Tom’s interception and Freddie Steinmark. Also, Tom would tell you his late pick wasn’t actually the biggest play in the game: that occurred much earlier on a conversation with a referee. Stay tuned for that one.

The Dance With Who Brung Ya podcast is back with a very special guest in Steve Ross. I’ve been reading Steve’s writing and musings on the Longhorns for a long time, first with Barking Carnival and Inside Texas as Srr50. Steve has done everything in Austin, from working as an SID at the University to being a producer for several TV stations here in town. We talk about how DKR transformed Texas into a national power, share Tommy Nobis stories, talk NIL, Jerry Gray’s recruitment and ghost stories from Steve’s time living at the Driskill Hotel. This is an evergreen podcast episode and a must listen.

In the glow of The Golden Hat’s return to Austin, I had the honor of hosting one of my favorite sports writers and Texas football prognosticators on the podcast this week in Paul Wadlington. I’ve been reading Paul for years since he was known as Scipio Tex with Barking Carnival and every summer I devour his Thinking Texas Football preview and am not only entertained, but I become a smarter fan and better writer for it. He hosts a fantastic podcast of his own, Everyone Gets a Trophy and writes incredibly well for Inside Texas. Another reason to join! Paul was gracious with his time and listened to my incredibly half-baked criteria on what makes my top five best games at DKR of the 21st century. Here’s hoping the Georgia/Texas game vaults to number one after a huge victory this weekend in Austin.

I had the honor of hosting one of the best Texas pass rushers of the 21st century in Jackson Jeffcoat. Jackson and his teammates gave Longhorn fans a lifetime worth of memories in 2013 when they obliterated the Sooners 36-20 in an upset game. That propelled Texas forward that season where they were able to play for a Big 12 Championship in Mack Brown’s final season.
Show notes summary:
RT Young and Jackson Jeffcoat focus on Jeffcoat's recruitment journey back in 2010, his experiences in the Red River Rivalry against OU, the amazing 2013 victory, picking off Tony Romo in the NFL and his transition from college football to the CFL. They discuss the emotional highs and lows of rivalry games, the importance of preparation, and the legacy of Longhorn football. Jeffcoat shares personal anecdotes about his family, his time in Canada where he won two championships with Winnipeg.

One of the best parts of writing Dance With Who Brung Ya since 2021 is how many amazing fans I’ve gotten to interact with. Cutting my chest open and pouring out my guts on paper for all to see about fanhood, football, failures and more has been a true blessing. I’d like to consider myself a pretty devoted fan, I mean I named a kid after a legendary Longhorn player, I have season tickets and I’m writing a book on the Longhorns after all. But let me just tell you, I have absolutely nothing on superfan Bill. After my SEC hate rankings article, Bill sent me an amazing e-mail full of great nuggets about Texas joining the new conference, road trips and more. But what impressed me most was this mind blowing sentence Bill ended his e-mail with: “I’ve got a lot of history packed into my brain – having missed one home game since 1976 (272 of 273), and 251 of the 321 road games in that period. October 12th will be my 49th straight OU game. I generally phrase my opinions as “based on nearly 50 years of close observation and an unhealthy emotional attachment.”
So, I had to have Bill on the pod to discuss. Stick with us as we get better sound quality and production value. Your host will get better too…
Summary
In this episode of the Dance with Who Brung Ya podcast, host Taylor Young interviews super fan Bill, who has an impressive record of attending 524 out of 595 Texas Longhorns football games since 1976. Bill shares his journey as a dedicated fan, recounting memorable games, the impact of legendary players like Earl Campbell, and the camaraderie among fans. He also discusses his experiences on the road, the rivalries with other teams, and the unique culture surrounding Texas football. Bill's passion for the sport and his stories provide a deep insight into what it means to be a Longhorn fan.

In the second episode of the Dance With Who Brung Ya podcast, I talk with national champion and lifetime Longhorn Drew Kelson. We discuss winning in Columbus in 2005, Joel Klatt, the similarities between his national championship group and the team now & finally his transition from a player to a fan. Check it out and share it with your friends. You can listen here or on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Overcast, etc.
Drew also confesses his love for Outback Steakhouse and I think he’s owed an NIL deal all these years later for all the bloomin’ onions he and his friends on the D-Line took down. We at DWWBYa would also welcome a sponsorship from Outback.
Follow Drew on Twitter and look out for more of his videos on the Inside Texas Football YouTube Channel, IT is my go-to place for all Texas team and recruiting news.
Error - in the podcast I accidentally called Drew’s hit of Joel Klatt a sack, it wasn’t, and my man Drew actually got a flag on the play (there was no targeting at the time, but my bad Drew). In my mind the hit was so emblematic of the beatdown that it’s the play I associate the most with that day. Joel Klatt also references it often. I’ve linked Drew’s game sealing forced fumble against the Buckeyes and the Colorado B12 Championship below.
