Dad's Favorite
Barrington Stage produced this in Pittsfield, MA with John Cariani and Paige Davis in 2014 (you can find highlights from the production on Youtube). My Dad was a hospitality driver in his retirement and along with the job came free tickets to the events he was driving his clients to sometimes. He saw this play at the beginning of the run, and I came home to visit that summer (I majored in theatre, I use vacation days to do contract theatre work and I spend all my disposable income seeing live productions), and all he talked about was how I had to see that show. So I bought tickets for both of us on a weeknight before it closed. I am so happy I rearranged plans to fit this play in. We sat in the front row of the otherwise sparsely filled mezzanine, and he was so excited before the show started that I was going to see it. Dad has always rooted for the underdog, loves sappy animated movies and thinks the 3 stooges are hilarious, and had NEVER insisted that I had to see something before, so I had no idea what to expect. The show was incredibly moving, very human and gave me a deeper insight into the essence of my dad than I had ever had before. So, when he passed in January I had to get a copy of the play to keep close. It makes me think of my dad and how much he wanted me to experience this show and how much compassion he had for the world.
