In Mt 16:23, Jesus confronts Peter with what he calls 'man’s interests': “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s” (NASB). Human interests in this age, dominated as they are by self-preservation and a desire for worldly success, are completely contrary to the interests of God as embodied in the gospel—so much so, in fact, that in God’s eyes “man’s interests” are in the same category as “Satan’s interests.” Critical to the gospel’s advance, therefore, is spiritual warfare understood first and foremost in terms of dying to self: “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me” (Mt 16:24, NASB). In this session Jeremy will discuss the core nature of spiritual warfare and how to fight with “the word of truth and weapons of righteousness” (2 Co 6:7), so as to keep our lives and ministry from becoming a stumbling block to the gospel. As we seek to grow in our understanding in the Scriptures and “accurately handle the word of truth” (2 Ti 2:15), it is imperative that we rightly steward and humbly relate to the knowledge with which we are entrusted. Though growing in knowledge and understanding is essential to faith, a wrong pursuit and stewardship of it can actually become a stumbling block to reliance upon God. Trusting in God through the word of truth—the gospel—requires a proper pursuit of knowledge that conforms itself faithfully to both message and way of life found within. In this session David will explore the question of how to steward knowledge in ways that advance the gospel rather than hinder it. In order for us to run the race of the Christian life with endurance, it is very important that our expectations for life in this age conform to the pattern observed in Jesus himself: “…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (Heb 12:1-3, NIV). Irrespective of where we are in our journey with the Lord, if we begin to take our eyes off of the “perfecter of our faith”—both the trials he endured, and the glory that awaited him on the other side—our expectations quickly become distorted, and we set ourselves up to become offended at God when they go unmet. In this session Richee will address the issue of unmet expectations, focusing on practical ways to keep them from becoming a source of offense toward God and an obstacle to gospel. The Biblical Gospel demands repentance, change and adjustments in all areas of life, and therefore it must be rightly defined, defended and declared. As we grow and mature in our relationship with God, various obstacles arise that are actually contrary to this Biblical Gospel. In this session David will discuss, in context to his personal testimony, two issues that have great potential to impede the advance of the gospel on various levels: Faulty theological paradigms, and misguided ministry pursuits. At the heart of the gospel is a call to relate to our enemies in a spirit of love and mercy, out of an awareness of the great mercy and forgiveness that we ourselves have received from God: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven” (Mt 5:44, ESV). In this late hour, it is extremely important that we as the Body of Christ demonstrate to the world the same kind of love that God himself demonstrated for us on the cross “while we were enemies” (Rm 5:10). Failure to do so is to misrepresent the gospel, and is therefore a hindrance to it. Drawing from the challenges that he and his family have experienced while serving in the Middle East, in this session Matthew will work through various Scriptures that challenge us to show the love of Christ “still more and more” (Php 1:9)—even to our enemies.
