  • The Obstacle of Failing to Love our Enemies
At the heart of the gospel is a call to relate to our enemies in a spirit of love and mercy, out of an awareness of the great mercy and forgiveness that we ourselves have received from God: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven” (Mt 5:44, ESV). In this late hour, it is extremely important that we as the Body of Christ demonstrate to the world the same kind of love that God himself demonstrated for us on the cross “while we were enemies” (Rm 5:10). Failure to do so is to misrepresent the gospel, and is therefore a hindrance to it. Drawing from the challenges that he and his family have experienced while serving in the Middle East, in this session Matthew will work through various Scriptures that challenge us to show the love of Christ “still more and more” (Php 1:9)—even to our enemies. • The Obstacle of Not Embracing the Cross
In Lk 9:23, Jesus says, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me” (NASB). The glory of the cross that leads men to inherit eternal life, also leads to a slow painful death to self in this age. As offensive as it may be to the human mind, a willingness to die to ourselves and submit to God’s purposes in bringing difficulty to our lives is necessary if the gospel is to be faithfully represented in the church and to the world. To deny the call to share in the Messiah’s sufferings in this age is to distort the gospel, and to distort the gospel is to hinder its advance. In this session Caleb will discuss one of the crucial steps we must take to ensure that our lives don’t become a stumbling block to the gospel: Coming to terms with the cost of discipleship. • The Obstacle of Falsehood
2 Peter 2 highlights false teachers as an ongoing obstacle to the way of Truth. False teachers exploit believers into following their example of indulging the flesh rather than crucifying it. False teachers are not going away; they will arise and deceive even to the end of the age. Each believer needs to be equipped to overcome the obstacle of falsehood, and it begins by embracing a love for the Truth in our own hearts and minds. The Spirit of Truth leads us to walk in the Truth, to deny ungodliness, to pick up our Crosses and follow Christ. There is an urgent need in in the Body of Christ for teachers and leaders who have been tried, tested and refined in the fire, who can provide an authentic example to the flock in the way of the cross. In this session Hans will discuss the vital roles that a love for the truth and a cross-centered example play in removing obstacles to the gospel. • The Obstacle of Insincere Motives
One of the striking features of Paul’s writings is the way he intentionally draws the attention of his readers to the fact that his life and ministry were driven by pure and sincere motives (see, eg, 2 Co 2:2; 1 Th 2:3-6), and to the various ways this fact was made known and put on open display (see, eg, 2 Co 6:3-10). In Paul’s mind, “secret and shameful ways” (2 Co 4:2, NIV) or “underhanded methods” (2 Co 4:2, NLT) put his ministry at risk of being “discredited” (2 Co 6:3, NIV), “blamed” (2 Co 6:3, HCSB), and found “at fault” (2 Co 6:3, ESV, NET). Sincere motives on the part of God’s servants—demonstrated in context to trial and difficulty—are themselves a powerful argument in favor of the truth and credibility of gospel. The converse, tragically, is also true: Insincere motives put the gospel’s credibility at risk of being called into question, and therefore constitute a serious stumbling block to its advance. In this session Tim will discuss how extremely important it is for us to allow God to “test our hearts” (2 Th 2:4), so that when we proclaim and represent the gospel, it is clear to all that our appeal “does not spring from error or impure motives” (2 Th 2:3, NIV).
