This is a song the Lord gave me in one sitting which is unusual. I had been praying for a few years for the Lord to give me a song about Israel, but I kept feeling Him say "I don't trust you with the issue of my heart yet." On this day, He finally let me into this issue He feels with Israel, His Firstborn, His beloved. Out of Him showing me what He felt, the chorus is a plea for Him to take us deeper in understanding the emotions God feels towards Israel in her past, present, and future state. The Holy Spirit gave me this melody a few years ago which slowly developed into this song taking years to finish. The first two verses are meant to set us on edge, begging us to hear Jesus strong rebuke in Revelation 2 and 3 to the 7 churches. While seeking to remain true to the Scriptures, a little deviation was used to articulate issues in the Western church particularly–not because it's worse, but because it's who I am most experienced with (However, the concept should be used personally, nationally, and internationally since it is the objective word of God). While starting as a dirge, the song ends eerily with the rewards of Revelation 2-3 whispered ironically begging us to hear the Spirit's words of hope and repent before His second coming so that we might receive those very rewards. Scoundrels and Sinners is a controversial song that I knew I had to include on this first album. We decided to end the album with it, just after the Seven Churches song as if to say "We ourselves are included in this rebuke from Jesus!" To sing "I have looked at pornography" as the first line of a song doesn't really fit with a pop-culture christianity, and makes a lot of people uncomfortable. That's ok. For me, this song is an anthem of the truth of my filth and the glory of Christ Jesus receiving a harlot like me... and if I stand firm to the end this adulterous cheating drunkard will be clothed in the glory of His resurrection on the day He appears. The Blessed Hope is a song that has endured many stages and changes and became one of our favorite projects. It is another song that was originally just an acoustic worship song sung in our house church becoming a type of anthem for us. The song focuses on the Titus 2 blessed hope reference (which came from a text conversation with John Harrigan) and 1 Peter 1 in it's entirety being the substance of what Titus most likely had in mind. The song came directly from the Spirit one morning while in prayer in the midst of desiring to write a hope-filled song about the Gospel. The Blessed Hope is part of The Witness EP. One day I read straight through Romans and Galatians back to back and straight through. After reading I was so stirred, I suddenly thought "Maybe the Lord wants to write a song right now?" Upon that moment the Holy Spirit gave me this song. I pray that it can be utilized in Cross centered worship. Behold the Lamb starts this album as the central focus of the Witness. We desired the focus to be removed from our problems, issues, and circumstances, and placed upon the Lamb of God, on the Cross, in order to allow the Holy Spirit to speak to us through the songs. Our hope was that this song could project one through the remainder of the album taking to heart what would be sung. Thus, the words are simple, as this song was born spontaneously on an acoustic guitar as we began house church worship a Sunday long ago, but the words are profound when we sing them and actually do what we are singing. These choruses first came forth during prayer meetings in downtown Minneapolis with the Miller family, Bruno family and Nance Cogshall, and then were further developed in Duluth, MN. The Lord used these choruses in both contexts to strengthen the believers as He called them to carry their cross daily through the help of the Holy Spirit.
