I went for a little run in the sunshine last weekend. It was the 'steady long run' of the week, and as the weather was gorgeous, I decided to finally dig out my little 360x3 camera, and take it out for a spin. I bought it a couple of years ago, but it's taken a little while to get used to it.

To be fair, filming AND running at the same time seems to take such a lot of concentration, that it usually makes me not enjoy the actual run itself

and thats a real shame, as I thoroughly enjoy going out for a run!

There's a couple of events which I have lined up for later this year, and I'd really like to have a go at filming them, so I think I just need to knuckle-down and get practicing again!

In the past I've struggled with sound , as the tiny microphones don't pick up my talking very well. The camera is a 360 camera, and also has various modes to select, and I keep getting muddled over which mode/setting I should use for each shot.

To make filming easier this time, I chose to avoid talking to the camera at all, and just focused on capturing footage. I also decided to just select 1 mode of shooting, and just use that throughout. The 360 mode is pretty cool, because it films everything, and then in post processing, I can manually select which part to actually create the individual clips.

The final thing was to pick a location that would be vaguely interesting to film, and so my run took me through the centre of the city of Lincoln, and up the hill towards the majestic Lincoln Cathedral.

On the plus side, I actually managed to enjoy the run this time, so that was an improvement on previous attempts, and I was pleased with the footage I got too. Considering I used just the one capture setting, I was able to capture a reasonable variety of different shots/angles.

On the downside, I forgot just how long it takes to edit all these clips into something useful. The run was on Sunday lunchtime, and it has taken all of Sunday afternonn and evening, along with Monday evening and some more time tonight, before I could get to the finished video... really need to find a way to streamline my workflow, but hopefully some regular practicing will help with that!

Speaking of which, I hope to get back out this weekend, to try again. The only thing to decide, where should I go next time...?

Hello again!

So, after my previous attempt of filming my run, and after the steep learning curve using the editing software, and the issues I discovered with my sound, I'm now back with another test video to see if it has better results this time round!

And personally, I think there is an improvement.

Lessons learnt:

1 - I'm holding the camera closer to my face, so obviously the camera can record the sound in more detail

Having less windy conditions than the previous day helped, although I don't really have much control over the weather to be fair. Maybe it is just a case of being aware that the wind could be a factor, and that if it is windy, to try harder to minimize the effect from it with the points above.

I still need to work on my endings though, its still quite abrupt here. Could do with some generic B roll footage to end on or something, or maybe just keep recording a little longer so it doesn't just stop immediately.

As for the run itself... I aimed for a nice and easy 10 miles, and I achieved that.

I mentioned in the film I was going to aim for another one on Wednesday, but due to time constraints I ended up only doing a short 35 min session

ended up getting squeezed into my lunch break, really struggled for time on Wednesday!

Thursday was a little better so I managed another 10 miles down to Navenby and back on Thursday evening. And now its Friday evening, and I'm just quickly creating this post, before heading to bed. Tomorrow (saturday) is gonna be a long day... in the morning will be another long run, hopefully approx 18 miles down to Whisby.

Its another excuse to take the new camera out I guess!

And after the run I have an assortment of chores to work through, and then I'll be off to visit my Dad for a small BBQ, and then we'll be watching Eurovision later on tomorrow evening.

I know, I know, it's a little bit naff, but it will still be a mostly enjoyable evening!!

I mentioned in the last post that I had recently purchased a new camera. It is an Insta360 X3, and I've bought it to upgrade my 'content creation capabilities' and move from blogging into the world of vlogging.

Basically, this means I've got bored of just writing, and fancied having a go at creating some videos!

As this is a Bank Holiday weekend, it means I have some spare time and not much particularly planned, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to give this a go. It is an action camera similar to the likes of a GoPro, but it shoots in 360 degrees, so helps to give more options regarding capturing clips, and will help provide a variety of different shots.

I bought an action camera as I want to use it while outside and moving. This will be on various walks and hikes and stuff, but I also want to take it while running. And it was for a short run on Sunday that became the first opportunity to test it out. It was out on the path near the bypass, and I picked it here as it was an easy route, and hopefully quiet as well. I spent 90 minutes running backwards and forwards, and the above video is the result.

On the whole though, I'm pleased with how this turned out, and I know where I can improve for next time. I enjoyed making this, and working through the edits. It was physically harder than I expected, with lots of running back and forth to try and get the sequences I needed. The editing also took quite a while to do, but I suspect that comes down to lack of experience again, and with practice I will be able to make the workflow quicker and more efficient.

So some positives, lots of room for improvement, so we'll see how the next one turns out

I have used the various HIVE front-ends (such as Hive.blog and @peakd) and I use the @ecency app, although I only use the phone app to check notifications and leave comments. All blog posting is done via @peakd.

My attention now turns to 3speak. This is apparently the Hive version of youtube, so this is a quick test post to see how @threespeak works.

It is only a 19 second clip, but I just wanted to see how the process worked, and how it easy it is.

As it turns out, very easy indeed. I found the site and created an account and verified it via email. I then linked it to my HIVE account (using one of the keys) the whole process took less than 5 minutes.

The clip I have picked was a quick one I filmed from last week when I was out hunting for some interesting sunrise images, it was a beautiful location, and at 5:45 AM it was beautifully quiet and still.

I do need a better tripod head though. The panning movement was done on a tripod, and it is surprisingly jerky. I guess i'll have to invest in a better quality tripod (or perhaps just borrow @dawnsart's tripod instead!)

Anyway, I'll stop waffling now as it'll take you longer to read this comment than the actual length of the video. My next video upload will actually be worth watching
