Data Action Golf with Dr. Aaron R. Stewart

One of the coolest things about the majors, is they allow non-touring pros to participate. We have amateurs in the Master and the British Open, we have PGA Club Pros in the PGA and we have anyone who can qualify through the USGA system play in the US Open. It is so amazing! I wonder and worry about these players the most, but the opportunity they have to learn their game and get rapidly better is unparalleled.  Getting better at golf can be greatly increased through tournament play if you do it the right way. The PGA Championship is upon us! It is crazy we are going to have another major so soon after Tiger's victory at the Masters, and even crazier Tiger hasn't played a competitive round since then. Insane. In today's show, we will take the Vegas oddsmakers top 20 and apply a formula based on the player's performance data, versus the strength of Bethpage Black. It took a bit to create the formula and get all the right data, but let's take a look and see how it all shakes out. Let's tee it up!

The PGA Tour put up a photo today of Brooks Koepka's yardage book, which showed a hand-drawn table with all his stock yardages, tied to the length of the swing required to hit those yardages. It was a very cool photo to see, but it got me worried. Based on my recent experience, and trying to get my game back in the swing of things and remembering my stock yardages. There is a right way to hit shots of varying yardages as tour players do, and there is a wrong way as most amateurs do. Let's tee it up.

Congrats to Steve Stricker for his first major of his career. He shoots a -4 on Monday to win the rain delayed Regions Tradition, the first major of the year for the PGA Tour Champions. Steve is such an easy guy to root for, it is great to see him get it done! Sung Kang also got it done on the PGA Tour, winning the AT&T Byron Nelson, as he pulled away on the back nine. It was a very impressive round of golf, especially when you look at his data from 2018. He has put in some serious work, and now has the hardware to prove it. Let's get into the data that got it done for both these champions, and see what we can learn from their performances. Let's tee it up!

New technologies are changing the way we learn and improve at golf. One of the most essential and informative tools is BodiTrak. The BodiTrak measures our "portable force" during the golf swing. Primarily how we use the ground when we are hitting a golf ball, it is fascinating to see how we move versus how we really should move compared to how the tour players use the ground during their swings. For almost 40 years Fred Shoemaker has been coaching golf.  He released his first book on golf in 1996, Extraordinary Golf, The Art of the Possible. Another cool weekend in golf. Congratulations go out to Megan Osland who played and won her two-day US Women's Open qualifier held at Bradenton Country Club in Bradenton, FL by shooting a 68-70 total respectfully. She will see her now at the 2019 US Women's Open being held at the Country Club of Charleston, SC from May 30-June 2. What an exciting experience and a big step for Megan, and good luck to her!

Congrats also need to go out to Sei Young Kim, who barely held it together enough to get into a playoff barely, and then win the LPGA Mediheal Championship. 

And finally congrats out to Max Homa to pick up his first win at the Wells Fargo Championship, a tournament where Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler both got their first PGA Tour wins. Let's take a good at the data and see how Max got it done! Let's tee it up!

So it begins again. The best golf learning experience in the world begins this week, and I will thankfully be participating once again. I do not take this opportunity lightly, especially after missing last year. I know this is something most will never enjoy. To be with fellow students committed to getting better at golf the right way, a lasting way, to make deeper discoveries and we make deeper friendships is priceless. The Summer of Golf Mastery at Extraordinary Golf, hosted by Fred & Jo Shoemaker and their staff, is upon me. And if it wouldn't wake up everyone in this motel, I might let out a guttural yell in unabashed excitement.  

I want to give you a peek into what is going to happen the next few days, not online today, but over the course of 5 months. This is the process that took me from an 18 handicap to scratch, and to a club championship. This is the very best way to really learn golf, and that isn't up for discussion. Let's tee it up!

Most golfers are usually terrible at creating realistic expectations for themselves. I don't know what it is about golf, but we seem to think we should be performing at levels far outside our level or earned expertise, and yet, there we are with the cursing, the club throwing, and the lies to make ourselves feel better about our muliganless score. Watching golfers react to their poor play can be so sad and so hysterical at the same time. 

We golfers tend to be a results-oriented group, and so focused on outcomes that we get in our way of the most rapid approach to lasting improvement and better play, and most of us haven't realized it yet. Focusing on your score, your shot or your outcomes is one of the very worst methods to improve, so let's discuss the best way instead. Let's tee it up.
