Welcome to a new episode of the DSMINDSETS podcast!
This time we invited Dr. Constance Sommerey and Dr. Darian Meacham. Constance is Director of the Diversity and Inclusivity Office of Maastricht University (UM) and Darian currently is Associate Professor of Philosophyhere at UM.
They have a very engaging conversation about what 'wokeness' means for society, companies and academia and they also talk about the question whether 'wokeness' can even threaten the academic freedom?
This episode is very philosophical compared to previous talks, so definitely let us know what you think about it and which other topics you would like us to cover with Constance and Darian in the future. Just send us a direct message on Instagram, we are looking forward to hear from you.

The reason for this special episode about the Women in Data Science (WiDS) event 2022 is that our host Chang Sun is also one of the WiDS Ambassadors who organized the regional event WiDS Datathon Maastricht 2022. Co-host of this episode is Anna-Lena Arlt who is the student assistant for this podcast but also participated in the Datathon. We invited her team members Sophia Longwe and Marisol Martin to join our podcast this week. All three are in their second year of the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science 'Global Studies' at UM. Together the three participants reflect on their motivations to join the event in the first place, their team spirit during the Datathon but also their take-aways. Furthermore, the three Global Studies Students also talk about the changes they want to make using data science and the importance of the field of data science in general. Female empowerment is also being discussed in this episode as it is important for the three students to see someone who is similar to them, for instance in a board of recruiters.
Until the 6th of March you can register and join the WiDS Conference 2022 online: https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/events/wids-maastricht-conference-2022
The Conference takes place on the 8th of March 2022 and is open to all members of society. You can find more information such as the exact program or related events on the linked website. We are looking forward to see many of you (virtually) there!

Welcome back to this new episode!
This week, our host Chang Sun invited Pedro Hernandez who has been working as a Data Scientist. For many years he implemented data products in different research fields such as Climate Change, Law Enforcement, Psychology, Migration, and Policy Analysis. Recently, he has been appointed as a Data Steward at the Maastricht University Library.
During their conversation, Pedro explains how he came to be a data steward and what his tasks in this position look like.
He also has been involved in many multidisciplinary collaborations. For example, he was one of the developers of the Legal Data Infrastructure for Law & Policy scholars at the Law&Tech Lab. Therefore, Pedro stressed the importance of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).

In this week's episode our host Dr. Tiffany Leung had an amazing conversation with Dr. Jamiu Busari who sees himself as an advocate for diversity, equity and inclusivity. First, Jamiu talked about his definitions of power and privilege and especially how certain events and experiences from his life course impacted them. He also gave great advice on how to advocate for a just system, saying "We must act with compassion but also not be judgmental or righteous about it. We should strive to build just systems where all people feel included, have equitable access to resources, and have a sense of belonging regardless of race, creed, religion, age, ability or sexual orientation."
In the further course of the conversation, Jamiu talked about six ways to be an ally and stressed the importance of continuously engaging in critically conscious conversations.
One of the main take-home points that Dr. Busari mentioned in this episode is also to recognize one's own power and privilege and the intersectionality of being privileged in one way but not in another.
Dr. Busari mentioned numerous interesting references during this conversation. You can find all links to them on our website!

We start into 2022 with a new episode of our DSMINDSETS Podcast!
This week, we got very interesting input from Morsal Yusoufzai. As an UM Research Assistant, she looks at the connection between boredom, aggression and self harm.
She talks about how she can objectively measure emotions like aggression using Data Science. Also, Morsal talks to host Chang Sun about how her findings can be replicated and the ways she collects data in the first place.
In the episode, Morsal also shares some experiences about growing up and being a student in The Netherlands, having an Afghan background.
Furthermore, Morsal is a member of the UM Unlimited Network community (UnliMited is a network dedicated to, for and by students and staff with visible and/or invisible disabilities). Being diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a mental health condition that can cause unusual levels of hyperactivity and impulsive behavior) herself after finishing university, Morsal experienced "being different" in different ways, though she always tries to look at the bright side.

In this new DSMINDSETS podcast episode we invited Dr. Jessica Alleva who is a Canadian body image researcher, an assistant professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience and also a Visiting Research Fellow at the Center for Appearance Research in the United Kingdom.
Together with our host Dr. Anna Schueth (FPN), Jessica passionately talked about recent research projects and her mission to improve the way people think and feel about their own body. In this conversation, Jessica also shared a lot of personal experiences and explains how these shaped her career trajectory until this day and how being a mother has impacted her work.
She also talks with Anna about how she collects data for her research and what type of data she uses to examine the phenomena of body image among a diverse group of people.
