If you’d like to explore the idea of joint finances and/or crafting a prenup, this episode is for you. For many, these are touchy topics, but they don’t have to be. Even if you decide not to combine your finances or get a prenup, I urge you to at least discuss these topics with your partner. The idea is to eliminate any taboo and create a safe space to openly discuss money with our partners.

Understanding is the ultimate step in a relationship. And when it comes to money psychology, it is a step that the later it’s taken the more damage it creates in the relationship. When partners reach a point of mutual understanding, they can take control and work toward reconciliation between opposing “money blueprints.” So, how do we do this? Listen to find out.

What is your partner's money blueprint? The biggest reason behind money fights isn’t the money itself, but the mismatch of the couple's money mindset. How was your partner raised to think about money? What’s important to your partner when it comes to money? What are his or her motivations and fears? These questions address the root cause, not the symptoms.

Whether you’re dating or in a committed relationship, understanding your and your partner’s money mindset is one of the most essential skills you’ll learn. Did you know we all have a “financial blueprint”? This blueprint is created and molded in our childhood and is influenced by our family and environment. Two things can happen when creating your blueprint as a child. You see a habit or pattern and you mimic that behavior and adopt it as your own, or you see a habit or pattern and you reject that behavior because you don’t agree with it. And for the truly self-aware, you see a habit and pattern, recognize how it has affected your life, and choose your own path. It all starts with the question, “How are you identical or opposite to either of your parent's money habits and ways of being?”

Have you ever wondered how money psychology impacts your dating life? It turns out that most arguments around money hamper many relationships. Still, most of these conflicts have nothing to do with the numbers themselves and everything to do with the psychology behind them, that is, how we were raised to think about money. In this podcast series, we’ll address the topic of money psychology, how to come to terms with our partner’s money blueprint, and how to reconcile opposing perspectives around money.
In this first episode, I’m sharing my personal story with money and explaining how our financial mindset might be the most important foundation for a relationship because it influences everything that we do. I’ll also introduce my co-hosts for season three: Alan & Katie Donegan from the Rebel Finance School. They offer a free 10-week finance course on how to master your personal finances. Did you know that 57% of divorced couples cite money as the reason for divorce and 40% of couples don’t even talk about money before marriage? It turns out that arguments around money have nothing to do with the numbers themselves and everything to do with the psychology behind money, that is, how you were raised to think about money. We all have a legacy — a story that is handed down from generation to generation about what money has meant to our family — and we bring those beliefs and feelings into our relationships. Season 3 of the Date Smart podcast is about those money beliefs, and how they affect our dating lives.
My name is Taylor Wade, and in the third season, I’ll be accompanied by Rebel Finance School founders Alan & Katie Donegan. Together we’ll explore our money psychology, how to discover the money mindset of the person you’re dating or your long-term partner, and how to reconcile opposing perspectives around money so you can get on the same page and become co-creators of your lives.
