Jim

struggled on through the next day, which was Monday. Then on Tuesday I

arrived at the hospital about an hour before he died. When he died,

Muriel was remarkably stoic, remarking later that she had no more tears

left.

There

were three or four other relatives there, but they didn't seem to say

much to Muriel. Suzi seemed to be the only one comforting her. I said

the normal pleasantries to the relatives about being sorry for their

loss, and then found myself alone, at the bedside, with Muriel and Suzi.

Muriel bent and kissed Jim. Straightening, she said; "god love him, he was an awkward bastard."
