Early this morning the White House announced that the President had ordered 50 million barrels of oil to be released from our strategic reserves.

These are reserves that are to be used in case of a major national emergency. Originally set up after World War 2, the objective was to provide the fuel necessary for the Army, Navy, and Air Force to maintain operations in the event of war.
