DawgmanRadio: Breaking Down Washington's 22-20 Win at Oregon State

Listen Later

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - gave their initial thoughts post-game after the No. 5 Washington Huskies traveled to Corvallis, Ore. and defeated the No. 11 Oregon State Beavers 22-20 in a manner few would have expected.

To start the podcast, Kim sets the scene as it was a deluge at Reser Stadium, and the rain never really stopped until near the end of the game. And even then it never fully went away. But what about the noise and the new stadium configuration? Did the overflow crowd offer the kind of hostile atmosphere befitting a game of this stature?

But to talk about how this game was pulled out by the Huskies after not scoring a point in the second half, the conversation immediately turned to the defense. Dealing with a rash of injuries - especially in the secondary - Washington bowed up when they needed to and also came away with three essential takeaways.

With Tuli Letuligasenoa and Bralen Trice up front, Carson Bruener in the middle for an injured Alphonzo Tuputala, and Jabbar Muhammad essentially taking away half the field in the secondary, it was those key players that led the effort that eventually pushed the Huskies over the line when their offense wasn't able to sustain drives and did unsuccessfully chase points at the end of the second quarter when they did score.

After a quick break the talk turned to the second half and the missed opportunity right off the bat after Muhammad came up with his second interception of the day. A missed field goal was as close as the Huskies would get to scoring in the final 30 minutes, so it was up to the defense to rise up and have the offense's back.

But when they needed to make a play after the defense stopped OSU on fourth down late in the fourth quarter and all Washington needed was a first down to salt the game away, they stuck to who they've been all year, an aggressive team who will find their top playmakers in one-on-one situations. With Michael Penix Jr. doing some damage with his legs for key first downs and then finding Rome Odunze on third down to win UW the game, it wasn't the way Ryan Grubb would have drawn it up but it was good enough to get to 11-0.

The guys talk about the aftermath of the game, including the fact that the Huskies achieved their first objective; punching their ticket to the Pac-12 Championship game. Kim also provides the relevant team and individual statistics on the night. They also talk about the legacy Kalen DeBoer continues to build as he's the only D1 coach besides Georgia's Kirby Smart to beat every ranked opponent they've played the past two seasons.

To wrap up the podcast, the guys give their final thoughts on the game, what it all means in the larger scheme, and looking ahead to a most eventful Apple Cup next weekend.
