There are moments when obeying authority and doing what is right are not the same thing. That is scary, especially when the person giving the order has power over you.

Pharaoh speaks to the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, and orders them to kill Hebrew sons when they help women give birth, while allowing daughters to live. But the midwives fear God and do not obey the king’s command.

In Acts 5, the apostles tell the authorities, “We must obey God rather than men.” Shiphrah and Puah live that truth long before the apostles say it. They do not rebel for selfish reasons or personal attention.

God honors those who fear Him more than human power. He sees the courage of two women whose names Pharaoh probably considered unimportant.

The midwives protect threatened children, but Jesus comes as the Son threatened by violent rulers and rejected by human powers. He obeys the Father fully, even to death on a cross.

Think of one place where pressure is asking you to cooperate with wrong. Decide ahead of time what obedience to God looks like.

Key Line: The fear of God can make you brave when human pressure feels dangerous.

PRAYER

God, teach me to fear You more than people. Give me courage like Shiphrah and Puah when pressure tells me to go along with wrong. Help me protect life, truth, and dignity.
