Ascetic Echoes

Day 11 - Nativity Fast 2025

Listen Later

Reflecting on St. Matthew 2:13—“Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him”—this meditation reminds us that the Nativity story is not only angels and shepherds under starlight, but also the shadow of fear and cruelty seated on earthly thrones. Christ is born into a world where innocence is threatened and power is often defended through violence—and God enters precisely there.

Rev. Fr. Dr. Timothy (Tenny) Thomas draws on the teaching of St. Cyril of Jerusalem, who reminds us that the enemy trembles wherever God takes flesh. Herod is shaken not because the Child is dangerous, but because truth unmasks false power. Light unsettles darkness, love threatens fear-built kingdoms, and holiness destabilizes every counterfeit throne.

The flight into Egypt teaches us that opposition often follows holiness. Wherever Christ is born, resistance arises. The same is true in our own lives: when we seek Christ more deeply, old fears, temptations, and discouragements awaken and whisper for us to turn back. Yet the Gospel assures us that God protects what He plans.

This meditation encourages us not to fear the struggle. Resistance is not a sign of God’s absence, but of His nearness. When fear arises, we are invited to pray simply: Lord Jesus, Light of my life, stay with me. For wherever Christ is being born in us, the enemy trembles.
