Day 15 – Feast of the Dormition: “Great Things”

“He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name” — Saint Luke 1:49

Today, as the Church celebrates the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, we hear again the humble song of a young woman who understood the secret of a holy life: God must become greater, while we become vessels of His grace.

Mary never measured her life by what she accomplished, but by what God accomplished through her. She said “yes” when His will was mysterious, served when no one applauded, remained faithful when the sword pierced her soul, stood beneath the Cross when love became painful, and continued in prayer with the Apostles after the Resurrection and Ascension.

The sacred Tradition of the Church celebrates her Dormition as the peaceful completion of a life completely offered to Christ. Her earthly journey was not wasted; every hidden sacrifice became part of God’s great work.

This is also our calling.

Perhaps our lives seem ordinary. Our prayers may feel small. Our sacrifices may go unnoticed. Yet God can do great things through an ordinary life surrendered to Him.

Today, let us stop asking, “What great thing can I accomplish?” and instead ask, “What can I surrender to God so that He may do His work through me?”

The Theotokos teaches us that holiness begins when we place our whole life into God’s hands.

May her Dormition awaken in us the hope that those who live in Christ will never truly die.

Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, through the prayers of Your Most Holy Mother, receive our lives as an offering of love. Accomplish Your good work within us, strengthen us in faith, and lead us from this earthly life into the joy of Your eternal Kingdom. For You are blessed, with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Day 14 – “Blessed Are You Among Women”

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” — Saint Luke 1:42

As the Dormition Fast draws to its final day, the Church invites us to contemplate the extraordinary mystery of the Most Holy Theotokos: the humble maiden of Nazareth became the Mother of the incarnate Son of God.

Yet her blessedness was never merely about privilege. It was about surrender. She received Christ, carried Christ, gave birth to Christ, suffered with Christ, stood beside His Cross, and remained faithful to Him until the end.

The sacred Tradition of the Church celebrates her Dormition not as an ending, but as the fulfillment of a life completely united to her Son. The one who carried Life within her is now remembered as having entered into the fullness of life with Him.

This speaks directly to us. We cannot control how our earthly journey will unfold, but we can decide what will fill our hearts. The Theotokos teaches us to fill them with Christ.

What we carry within us eventually shapes how we live. If we carry resentment, fear, pride, and anxiety, they will overflow into our relationships. But if we carry Christ through prayer, humility, forgiveness, and love, His presence will begin to shine through us.

Tomorrow we celebrate the Dormition. Today, let us ask: What am I carrying in my heart that I need to surrender to Christ?

May the Mother of God teach us to carry Christ faithfully, so that Christ may become our life, our peace, and our hope.

Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, through the prayers of Your Most Holy Mother, cleanse our hearts and make them worthy dwelling places for Your grace. Help us to surrender every fear, burden, and attachment to You, and teach us to live and die in the hope of Your eternal Kingdom. For You are blessed, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and always, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Day 13 – From Earthly Life to Heavenly Hope

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain” — Philippians 1:21

The Church approaches the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos not with fear, but with hope. Her earthly life was completely centered upon Christ, and therefore her departure from this world was not defeat, but a passage into the fullness of life with Him.

From the beginning, Mary’s life was a journey toward Christ. She received Him in faith, carried Him in her womb, nurtured Him in humility, stood beside His Cross in sorrow, rejoiced in His Resurrection, prayed with His Apostles, and remained faithful until the end.

The sacred Tradition of the Church tells us that when the time came for her departure, the Apostles were gathered around her, and she peacefully entrusted herself to her Son. Her Dormition reveals the destiny toward which every faithful Christian is called: life in Christ beyond death.

We often live as though this present world is our permanent home. We become consumed by possessions, achievements, worries, and earthly recognition. Yet the Mother of God reminds us that everything in this life is temporary, while communion with Christ is eternal.

To live for Christ changes how we face both life and death. We can forgive more freely, love more deeply, release our anxieties, and carry our crosses with hope because death does not have the final word.

As we approach the Feast of the Dormition, let us ask: If Christ is truly our life, what are we still afraid to surrender to Him? May the Theotokos teach us to live every day with our hearts already turned toward heaven.

Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, through the prayers of Your Most Holy Mother, free us from fear of death and attachment to passing things. Teach us to live wholly for You, that when our earthly journey ends, we may depart this life in faith, hope, and peace, trusting in Your resurrection and eternal mercy. For You are blessed, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen

Day 12 – The Mother Who Remained

“Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord” - Saint Luke 1:45

The life of the Most Holy Theotokos was a life of faithful remaining. She remained when God’s plan was difficult to understand. She remained beneath the Cross when others fled. She remained with the Apostles in prayer after the Ascension. And according to the sacred Tradition of the Church, she continued to strengthen and encourage the apostolic community until the end of her earthly life. Her greatness was not found in seeking attention, but in remaining faithful.

This is a powerful lesson for us. We live in a world that constantly encourages us to move on, abandon commitments, seek something easier, and give up when circumstances become difficult. But Christian faithfulness often means simply remaining— remaining faithful to Christ, remaining faithful in prayer, remaining committed to our family, remaining present in the life of the Church, and remaining hopeful when answers do not come quickly.

The Mother of God teaches us that perseverance is itself an offering to God.

Perhaps today we are tired. Perhaps we are carrying a burden no one sees. Perhaps our prayers seem unanswered. Do not give up. Remain with Christ. The same woman who faithfully remained beside her Son’s Cross teaches us that God is present even when we cannot see what He is accomplishing. During this Dormition Fast, let our prayer be simple: “Lord, give me grace to remain faithful.”

Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, through the prayers of Your Most Holy Mother, strengthen us to remain faithful to You in every season of life. When we are weary, give us strength; when we are discouraged, give us hope; and when we are tempted to give up, keep us close to You. For You are blessed, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Day 11 – A Heart That Prays With the Church

“These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus” — Acts 1:14

After the Ascension of Christ, the disciples returned to Jerusalem. They had witnessed the glory of the risen Lord, yet they also knew that a great work lay before them. What did they do? They prayed.

And among them stood the Most Holy Theotokos.

The Mother of God, who had carried Christ within her, who had stood beneath His Cross, and who had witnessed His Resurrection and Ascension, now remained with the Apostles in prayerful expectation of the Holy Spirit.

Her presence teaches us something essential: we were never created to walk the Christian life alone. The Mother of God remained within the communion of the Church, praying with the Apostles and awaiting God’s promise.

How often we try to carry everything ourselves. We struggle privately, worry privately, and sometimes even pray privately when God is calling us into the strength of the worshipping community. The Church is not merely a building we enter; it is the Body of Christ in which we are nourished, strengthened, corrected, and healed.

The Theotokos teaches us to remain faithful when we are waiting. She did not demand immediate answers. She prayed, trusted, and waited for the Holy Spirit.

During this Dormition Fast, let us rediscover the power of persevering prayer. When God seems silent, stay in the room. Keep praying. Stay with the Church.

For sometimes the greatest miracle is not that God changes our circumstances, but that through prayer He changes us.

O Lord Jesus Christ, through the prayers of Your Most Holy Mother, teach us to remain steadfast in prayer, united in Your Church, and faithful while we wait upon Your grace. Fill our hearts with Your Holy Spirit and make us worthy vessels of Your peace and love. For You are blessed, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Day 10 – Standing Beneath the Cross

“Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother” — Saint John 19:25

The Most Holy Theotokos stood where almost everyone else had fled. At the Cross, she witnessed the suffering and death of the Son whom she had miraculously conceived, carried, and lovingly raised. Simeon’s ancient prophecy was now fulfilled: a sword was piercing her soul.

Yet Mary did not run away.

She stood.

There is profound spiritual strength in that single word. The Mother of God teaches us that faith is not only found on the mountain of joy; it is also found beneath the Cross. She could not remove Christ’s suffering, but she could remain with Him in love.

How often do we ask God to remove every difficulty from our lives? Yet sometimes our greatest act of faith is simply to remain—remaining faithful when prayer feels dry, remaining hopeful when circumstances are painful, remaining loving when we have been wounded, remaining near Christ when we do not understand His ways.

The Mother of God teaches us that we do not need to understand everything in order to trust God. At the Cross, there were no explanations—only love, silence, and steadfast faith.

Our daily crosses may be smaller and hidden, but they can become places of holiness when we remain with Christ.

During this Dormition Fast, let us learn to stand with the Theotokos beneath the Cross—not running from suffering, but discovering Christ’s presence within it.

Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, by the prayers of Your Most Holy Mother, the Ever-Virgin Theotokos, who stood faithfully beside Your Cross, strengthen us to remain steadfast with You in every trial. Calm our troubled hearts, increase our faith, and keep us ever abiding in Your love.

For to You belong all glory, honor, and worship, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Day 9 – “Whatever He Says to You, Do It”

“His mother said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it’” — Saint John 2:5

At the wedding feast in Cana, the Most Holy Theotokos perceived a need that others had overlooked. With the tenderness of a loving mother, she brought that need before her Son. Then, turning to the servants, she uttered words that summarize the whole Christian life: “Whatever He says to you, do it.”

These are the last recorded words of the Mother of God in the Holy Scriptures. How fitting that her final message is not about herself, but about Christ. Throughout her life, the Virgin Mary never drew attention to her own greatness. She always pointed others to her Son, the Savior of the world.

The servants at Cana could not understand why they were asked to fill jars with water. Yet their obedience prepared the way for a miracle. So too in our lives, God often asks us to obey before we understand. Faith is not the demand for explanations, but the willingness to trust the wisdom and goodness of the Lord.

How many blessings are delayed because we resist His commandments? How many miracles are missed because we prefer our own will? The Mother of God teaches us that the path to joy begins with obedience.

During this Fast, let us place our lives beneath the words of the Theotokos. Whether Christ calls us to forgive, to pray, to repent, to endure, or to serve, may our answer be one of humble surrender. For where Christ is obeyed, water is changed into wine, sorrow into joy, and ordinary lives into vessels of divine grace.

Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, by the prayers of Your Most Holy Mother, the Ever-Virgin Theotokos, grant us hearts that obey Your holy commandments with simplicity and trust. Deliver us from self-will, stubbornness, and unbelief, and fill us with the grace of humble obedience, that we may rejoice in Your heavenly Kingdom.

Day 8 – The Holiness of Hiddenness

“And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them… And His mother kept all these things in her heart” — Saint Luke 2:51

After the wonders of Bethlehem and the mystery of the Temple, the Gospel speaks very little about the years that followed. The Most Holy Theotokos returned to Nazareth and embraced a life hidden from the eyes of the world. No crowds surrounded her. No honors were given to her. Day after day, she fulfilled her calling with humility, prayer, and love.

In God’s sight, these hidden years were not wasted years. The Mother of God teaches us that sanctity is often formed not in extraordinary deeds, but in ordinary faithfulness. Holiness grows in the quiet offering of daily duties, in patient endurance, in unseen sacrifices, and in a heart continually turned toward God.

How often we desire dramatic experiences or visible achievements, imagining that greatness lies in being noticed. Yet the Virgin Mary reminds us that heaven measures differently. A prayer offered in secret, a burden borne with patience, an act of kindness known only to God—these are precious in His sight.

During this Fast, let us not despise the ordinary moments of life. The kitchen, the workplace, the parish, the family table, and the hidden struggles of the heart can all become places of sanctification when lived in communion with Christ.

The Mother of God became the most exalted of all creatures because she was content to be the humble handmaid of the Lord. In her hidden life, we discover the beauty of quiet faithfulness.

Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior, teach us to serve You faithfully in the ordinary moments of our lives, as Your Most Holy Mother, the humble Theotokos, served You in prayer and obedience. Deliver us from vanity, impatience, and the desire for human recognition. Grant us grace to offer every task, sorrow, and joy to You, that our whole life may become an offering pleasing to You and that we may grow daily in holiness. For to You, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, belong all glory, honor, and worship, now and always, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Dormition Fast Day 7 - Seeking Christ Above All

“And when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him” — Saint Luke 2:45

For three days the Most Holy Theotokos and the righteous Joseph searched anxiously for the young Jesus. The One whom she had borne in her womb, nurtured with tender care, and loved above all things seemed absent from her sight. Yet the Virgin Mary did not surrender to despair. She sought Him diligently until she found Him in the Temple, about His Father’s business.

Even after hearing His mysterious words, the Gospel tells us that she did not fully understand all that had been spoken. Nevertheless, she continued to trust and, once again, “kept all these things in her heart.”

There are times when we too experience a kind of spiritual dryness. Prayer seems difficult, joy fades, and God’s presence appears distant. In such moments, the Mother of God teaches us not to give up, but to seek Christ with greater fervor. His apparent absence is often an invitation to deeper faith and more earnest prayer.

The tragedy is not that we sometimes lose the sense of God’s presence, but that we cease searching for Him. The Virgin Mary shows us that no effort spent seeking Christ is ever wasted.

During this Fast, let us examine our priorities. Have earthly cares crowded out our love for God? Have we become satisfied with outward religion while neglecting the living presence of Christ? Like the Mother of God, let us return to the Temple—to prayer, to the Scriptures, to repentance—and there we shall find Him anew.

O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, by the prayers of Your Most Holy Mother, the Ever-Virgin Theotokos, grant that we may seek You above all earthly things. When our hearts grow cold and our souls wander from You, draw us back into Your holy presence. Strengthen us with perseverance in prayer, unwavering faith, and an unceasing desire to abide in You.

Day 6 – Transfiguration of Our Lord

“And He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light” — Saint Matthew 17:2

The Feast of the Holy Transfiguration is a radiant revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ and the destiny to which He calls all who follow Him. On Mount Tabor, the disciples beheld not a new glory, but the eternal divine glory of the Son of God shining through His humanity. Before they witnessed the sorrow of the Cross, Christ strengthened them with a vision of His glory, revealing that suffering is never the end for those who abide in Him.

This holy feast also reveals the purpose of the Christian life. Through repentance, prayer, fasting, participation in the Holy Mysteries, and lives of love and holiness, we are transformed by the grace of the Holy Spirit into the likeness of Christ. As St. Paul teaches, we are being changed “from glory to glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18). The uncreated light that shone from Christ on Tabor continues to illumine, sanctify, and renew every heart united to Him.

The mountain of Tabor invites us to leave behind the distractions of the world, ascend through prayer, behold Christ with purified hearts, and then descend to serve others as bearers of His light. May this glorious feast renew our hope, deepen our love for the Savior, and strengthen us to become living icons of His holiness in our homes, our parishes, and our communities.

Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, who revealed the splendor of Your divinity upon Mount Tabor before Your holy disciples, illumine our hearts with the light of Your presence. Transfigure our minds, purify our hearts, strengthen our faith, and make us worthy to reflect Your love and holiness in all that we do. Grant that, walking faithfully in Your commandments, we may behold the radiance of Your eternal Kingdom. For You are our God, and to You we offer glory, honor, thanksgiving, and worship, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
