Day 114 - Psalms 114 of 150 Days of Psalms Mountain Top Prayer Pastor Chidi Okorie Episode 4 - Digital Ink

Listen Later

Psalm 114 is a short but powerful psalm that poetically recounts the miraculous deliverance of Israel from Egypt and the extraordinary manifestations of God’s power during their journey to the Promised Land. This psalm vividly portrays the natural world responding to the presence and power of God, emphasizing His sovereignty over all creation.

Overview of Psalm 114

Psalm 114 consists of only eight verses, but it is rich in imagery and symbolism. The psalm does not directly address God but instead narrates events in a way that invites the reader or listener to reflect on the mighty acts of God and their significance.

Verses 1-2: Israel’s Exodus from Egypt

The psalm begins by recalling the exodus of Israel from Egypt:
“When Israel went out from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language, Judah became His sanctuary, Israel His dominion.”

Here, the psalmist highlights the transformation that took place when Israel left Egypt. The people of Israel, referred to as “the house of Jacob,” were liberated from a foreign land, where they were oppressed and lived among a people who spoke a different language. Upon their exodus, Judah and Israel are described as God’s sanctuary and dominion, signifying that God now dwells among them and rules over them. This marks Israel as a special people set apart for God, with His presence in their midst.

Verses 3-4: The Response of Nature

The next two verses describe the reaction of the natural world to God’s presence:
“The sea looked and fled; the Jordan turned back. The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs.”

These verses poetically depict the Red Sea fleeing and the Jordan River turning back, referencing the miraculous parting of these waters during the exodus (Exodus 14 and Joshua 3). The mountains and hills “skipping” suggest a joyful or awe-filled response to God’s mighty acts. This imagery emphasizes the power of God over creation, where even the most formidable natural features respond to His command.

Verses 5-6: The Psalmist’s Questions

The psalmist then asks rhetorical questions that highlight the astonishing nature of these events:
“What ails you, O sea, that you flee? O Jordan, that you turn back? O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs?”

These questions underscore the extraordinary nature of what occurred. The psalmist’s queries are not meant to seek answers but to draw attention to the awe-inspiring power of God that causes these natural phenomena. The implication is clear: nothing in creation can stand before God; everything must respond to His will.

Verses 7-8: The Earth Trembles Before God

The psalm concludes with a call for the earth to tremble before the Lord:
“Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.”

This final section emphasizes the reason for the earth’s trembling: the presence of the Lord, the God of Jacob. The reference to turning “the rock into a pool of water” and “the flint into a spring of water” alludes to the miracles in the wilderness where God provided water for the Israelites from rocks (Exodus 17:6; Numbers 20:11). These acts of provision further demonstrate God’s sovereign power over nature and His care for His people.

Themes and Significance

1.God’s Sovereignty Over Creation: The psalm emphasizes that God’s power is so great that the natural world reacts in extraordinary ways—seas flee, rivers turn back, and mountains skip. This theme underscores that all of creation is under God’s control.
2.The Exodus as a Defining Event: Psalm 114 reflects on the exodus as a central event in Israel’s history, highlighting it as a moment when God demonstrated His power and established His...
