Day 118 - Psalm 118 of 150 Days of Psalms Mountain Top Prayer Pastor Chidi Okorie

Listen Later

Psalm 118 is a Psalms of thanksgiving and praise, celebrating the steadfast love and enduring mercy of God. It is a part of the Hallel, a collection of psalms (Psalms 113-118) traditionally recited during Jewish festivals such as Passover. The psalm is characterized by its themes of deliverance, triumph, and gratitude.

Key Themes and Structure:

1.Thanksgiving for God’s Mercy (Verses 1-4):
The psalm begins with a call to give thanks to the Lord for His enduring mercy. It is a communal call to Israel, the house of Aaron, and all who fear the Lord to acknowledge His everlasting love.
2.Personal Testimony of Deliverance (Verses 5-18):
The psalmist recounts a personal experience of distress and how calling on the Lord brought deliverance. There is a strong emphasis on trust in God over trust in man or princes, highlighting that the Lord is the psalmist’s strength, song, and salvation. The psalmist celebrates victory over enemies, attributing it to the Lord’s intervention.
3.The Rejected Stone Becomes the Cornerstone (Verses 19-24):
These verses are prophetic and significant, especially in Christian theology. The “stone the builders rejected” becoming the “cornerstone” is often interpreted as a reference to Jesus Christ. The psalmist expresses joy and amazement at the work of the Lord, acknowledging that this is the day the Lord has made, and encouraging rejoicing in it.
4.Final Call to Praise (Verses 25-29):
The psalm concludes with prayers for salvation and prosperity, followed by a final declaration of God’s goodness. The psalmist and the community bless those who come in the name of the Lord and acknowledge His light. The psalm closes with a repeated call to give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and mercy.

Reflection:

Psalm 118 is a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness and the assurance that comes from placing trust in Him. It serves as a testimony of deliverance from distress and a celebration of the Lord’s victorious intervention in the lives of His people. The psalm also foreshadows key elements of Christian theology, particularly the idea of Jesus as the cornerstone rejected by men but chosen by God.

For believers, Psalm 118 can be a source of comfort and encouragement, especially in times of difficulty. It invites readers to reflect on the greatness of God’s mercy and to respond with heartfelt thanksgiving and praise, recognizing that His love truly endures forever.
