Name it & Claim it - Empowerment Podcast

Day 2: Hacking the psychology of confidence

Listen Later

Trusting in your abilities

  • At its core, confidence refers to an individual's belief in their ability to succeed or perform well in a particular situation
  • Goal: I think I can pull this stunt off/ I’ve got this
  • The question is: Who do you have to become?
  • The highway to empowerment: Ask yourself this question: What would my goddess do?

The psychology of confidence

  • Our brain is a machine and has two servo mechanisms when it comes to ACTIONS
    • It works like this: Input or command and execution:
    • Command: Pick up the pen, execution: you’re picking up the pen without thinking “engaging the muscles of my arms, going on course, grabbing the pen
  • Typ 1: The goal is known (you have executed the action multiple times already and your brain knows how to do it)
    • This is called the automatic mechanism
    • Goal -> Action -> Course correction (adjusting the course of your arms moving) -> Goal accomplished
  • Typ 2: The goal is unknown or part of the solution is missing
    • The creative mechanism
    • Input or “Solve this problem” → Then the brain starts to scan through all memory of information it has → To find the missing piece/ achieve the goal
  • Here comes the crucial and super amazing part:
    1. Our mechanisms are focused on the “end results”. You don’t have to figure out the HOW. You don’t need to stress about the HOW
  • 2. You must learn to trust your creative mechanism to do its work and not jeopardize it by becoming overly concerned and anxious about whether or not it will work
    You must LET it work
  • 3. We can support our brains by having these “memories that will be scanned” in handy.

Self-Image

  • Our Self-image is the mental Blueprint or picture of ourselves
  • All your actions, feelings & behaviours- even your abilities are always consistent with your self-image: in short, you will “act like” the sort of person you conceive yourself to be
  • Your brain can’t understand if something is real or just an imagination
  • You don’t have to become more confident
  • You only have to make your brains believe that you are confident
    • And that you can through all challenges, and new problems with ease
    • You don’t have to know how you can solve all problems, you only need to trust in your abilities and skills
  • TRAIN your creative mechanisms, finding solutions to “new problems” and training a new success mechanism

Today’s challenge: Dress for success

  • Wear clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable.
  • Putting on a badass outfit boosts your mood and confidence instantly
  • Dress for the job or situation you want, not the one you have.

Journaling prompts from today’s challenge

Your most confident self:

  • Who do you have to become in order to be the confident person you want to be?
  • What habits would your most confident self have?
  • How would she talk to herself?
  • What would she not do?
  • What habits would she drop?
  • How would she reply to criticism?

Self-image:

  • Evidence from the past that support the new self-image that I am a confident person
  • Write a list of all the old stories that no longer serve you and your new self-image
