In this episode of Reading Through the Bible Together, we’re reading Judges 1–5, where the cracks in Israel’s faith begin to widen.

The book opens with partial obedience. Instead of fully driving out the nations as God commanded, Israel compromises. They settle for coexistence instead of covenant faithfulness. And that compromise becomes a pattern. Judges 2 gives us the cycle that will define the whole book: the people forget the Lord, fall into idolatry, face oppression, cry out, and God raises up a deliverer. Mercy keeps meeting rebellion.

In chapters 3–5, we see the first judges: Othniel, Ehud, Shamgar, and then Deborah and Barak. God delivers His people in surprising ways, even through unlikely leaders. The victory song in chapter 5 celebrates that when God’s people are willing and God moves in power, no enemy can stand.

Judges 1–5 shows us how quickly hearts drift when memory fades. Partial obedience leads to long-term bondage. Yet it also shows a patient God who keeps rescuing, again and again.

And it leaves us longing for something better than a cycle of sin and temporary rescue. It points us to Jesus, the true and final Deliverer, who breaks the cycle, defeats the enemy completely, and gives lasting freedom.

If you haven’t read Judges 1–5 yet, pause and do that now, then come back and let’s read it together.
