In this episode of Reading Through the Bible Together, we’re reading 1 Kings 11–15, where the high point of Solomon’s reign gives way to division and decline.
Solomon’s heart turns away from the Lord as he follows after other gods, influenced by his many foreign wives. The king who was known for wisdom fails in the most important place: his devotion to God. As a result, the kingdom begins to fracture. God raises up adversaries, and after Solomon’s death, the nation splits into two kingdoms, Israel in the north and Judah in the south.
Jeroboam leads the northern kingdom but immediately establishes false worship to secure his power. Golden calves are set up, and a pattern of idolatry takes root. Meanwhile, in Judah, some kings follow the Lord while others drift, creating a mixed legacy.
These chapters show how quickly things unravel when leaders turn from God. Wisdom, success, and blessing cannot replace obedience. A divided heart eventually leads to a divided kingdom.
If you haven’t read 1 Kings 11–15 yet, pause and do that now, then come back and let’s read it together.
