Psalm 1:2 (NLT)
But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.
Growing up I was not a particularly law abiding youngster. Every sign that said ‘Keep off the grass’ was an invitation to walk on it. Buildings were for climbing on and when caught by the park keeper I took a clip around the ear in good part. Better that than mum and dad being informed. One evening my cousin and I took great delight in rearranging the signed names of houses from lawn to lawn. Sadly we were spotted, a Panda car arrived and the policeman told us to put everything back. Of course we didn’t know where we’d originally taken each sign from and so were able to continue our prank under the stern gaze of a law officer. Then we had to face the music back to our crestfallen parents.
The Law of the Lord can come across as something prescriptive and restrictive. However, it is in fact releasing, for it introduces us to the source of life itself. We are to meditate within it. This simply means taking a verse and sitting there with it continually within our heart and mind as we peer ever deeper into what God has to say to us in that word. There will undoubtedly be a clear meaning. Yet, there is always a personal word for each one of us in the circumstances in which we find ourselves.
I well remember reading Psalm 27 when Katey and I battled with the MS. Here was God declaring he was our light and our salvation. Well we were blind and blindly hitting out as we staggered through life. Slowly we understood that it was not looking around us at what the world might do or friends might offer. It was fixing our gaze upon Jesus that provided both light and then inspiration to move forward and continue in God’s Way. Our salvation was most certainly an eternity with Jesus; yet more immediately Christ was our salvation from our anger and bitterness.
QUESTION: Do you find it hard to live in the present moment or do past pains and future worries pull you away?
PRAYER: Heavenly Lord, your word sustains me, is the source of my hope and help. Lead me on the road everlasting.
