West Of What

Day of the Land

Listen Later

Kahreela engages in a searing and honest conversation with Samaher, a Palestinian filmmaker who speaks with unflinching truth about her experience as a Palestinian woman — the displacement of her people, and her anger at the greed of the 1% and the violence of patriarchy. Their conversation also honours the deep power of the land, and the sacred right every person holds to access the land they were born to.

Samaher Alqadi is a Palestinian filmmaker and screenwriter, born as one of nine children in the ALJalazone refugee camp near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

She emerging voice in Arabic documentary filmmaking, focusing on powerful narratives that explore the evolving status of women and dissident artists in the Middle East. Her work often delves into personal experiences and sheds light on the realities of life in Palestine.

Her first feature-length documentary, As I Want, has been screened at more than 100 international festivals and has won 18 awards, including Best Film and the Audience Award at the International Festival de Femme in Paris, as well as recognition from the Bordeaux International Film Festival. Through words left unsaid to her late mother, As I Want examines the chains of her childhood and highlights the power of women in revolutionary struggles against all odds.

Currently, Samaher is working on an exciting new project that seeks to bridge French and Palestinian cinema through a French-Palestinian production collaboration. Her longstanding dedication to cinema and the arts, combined with her deep cultural and linguistic ties to both Palestine and France, speaks to her value as an active contributor to French society and culture.
