In the spring of 2019, the Calgary community group, Action Dignity, formed out of the Ethno-Cultural Council, remaining dedicated to working with culturally diverse communities, over 70 in total. What they have found is that the welcome for immigrants to Calgary was often challenging and highly racialized. Part of the effort to change that is happening on February 1 at Arts Commons. "Our Canada, Our Story" asks what is the impact of being a new Canadian in Alberta? A collection of youth are working with playwright, Melanee Hunt to help tell these stories, some of whom have never acted before. However, the director the show, Michelle Thrush, is determined to make the show a good experience. Thrush is an award-winning actor who's appeared in shows like "Arctic Air," "Tin Star," and "North of 60." She spoke with Russell, along with actors Bukky Wanda and Shae Kubur.

The appeal of the mysterious in a good ghost story is evergreen with some people as they can find it in a book, a movie, or even a play. Vertigo Theatre have made their name bringing in audiences who love a good fright and the latest character entangled in mystery is Miss Elizabeth Le Petyt. She's an aspiring author, who ventures to Cornwall to escape her hectic London life but the cottage she chooses has a mysterious past, and seems like the perfect inspiration for her writing. However, misplaced items, inexplicable events and whispers in the dark disrupt her solace. Is this her own past coming back to haunt her? It all culminates in a show called "Whispers in the Dark," a haunting Victorian ghost story running until February 23rd. The woman who wrote the show is Anna Cummer, an accomplished actor and performer.

Ask a driver how much they pay for auto insurance and the likely answer will be “too much.” It seems Albertans are seeing auto insurance rate increases that some experts say show no signs of stopping. In the province, recent increases have been as high as 29.8%, depending on the insurer’s individual Automobile Insurance Rate Board-approved increase. How can we avoid shelling out more than we need to? Some of it comes down to selecting coverage and even what cars we buy. Anne Marie Thomas is an insurance expert with InsuranceHotline.com and the website acts as a resource for consumers to review and compare insurance rates. She spoke with Russell Bowers with advice and tips on how drivers can save on auto insurance.

Daybreak's books reviewer, Angie Abdou, ("The Bone Cage" "Home Ice - Reflections of a Reluctant Hockey Mom") is back on Daybreak for 2020 and this month a new poetry collection from Peter Midgely. In 2017, Edmonton singer-songwriter, Ann Vriend was asked to write a couple of songs for a project at two Edmonton public schools. The songs ended up recorded and now she's heading back to school for a concert on January 24 where she will be performing with student choirs again, from Mount Royal and Highlands high schools. Russell Bowers got a preview of the show with Ann Vriend after they listened to her last collaboration, the title track from her album, Flame.
