This episode of Daycare Chronicles 101 is personal, powerful, and full of perspective.

I sat down with my husband, Marcus Muhammad, a high school physical education teacher with more than 30 years in education, to talk about what he has seen in our children, our schools, and our families over the years.

One statement Marcus made really stayed with me:

"Children have not changed. Parenting has changed."

That opened the door to a much bigger conversation about the social and emotional needs of children today, parenting, relationships, consistency, accountability, and what educators are seeing inside our schools.

I work with children at the very beginning of their journey, during the infant, toddler, and preschool years. Marcus sees them later, as teenagers and young adults. When you put those two perspectives together, you begin to see just how important those early foundations really are.

We also talked about our marriage, our faith as Muslims, and the importance of keeping Allah at the center of our lives and our relationship.

In this heartfelt episode, I share the true story behind the $5 bill that changed the course of my life. As a young mother with three children and one on the way, I woke up to find that my husband at that time had left for work and left $5 on the dresser for the day. At that moment, I felt completely defeated, overhelmed, and unsure of how I was going to make it.

Marrying her childhood friend and writing a book about the loss of her father as a child.
