In the early 90's, console gaming was at its 16 bit peak. Both SEGA's Genesis and the Super Nintendo owned the marketplace, while other systems like the Neo-Geo offered alternatives for the hardcore gamer.
But the industry was changing. While these consoles were hugely successful, they still ran on cartridges, and this limited what the consoles could do. CD-Rom was also making inroads, with systems like the CD-i from Philips and Sony showing what could be done with the disc format. I'll never forget playing the Palm Springs Open golf game and thinking, wow, this is the future.
Despite being co-developed with Sony, though, the CD-i never really took off, hampered by a slow processor and an expensive price tag.
With the next generation of consoles from SEGA and Nintendo still a way off, there was a gap for a new machine to go up against the Super Nintendo and Genesis, and lead the charge for the CD revolution. Enter the 3DO.
In the first episode of Memories of 3DO, learn about the gaming legends behind the system, and how a new challenger to SEGA and Nintendo's dominance came from the unlikeliest of sources.

In 1993, electronics giant Panasonic released the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer, more commonly referred to as just 3DO.
At the time, this 32-bit gaming console was a huge leap over competing consoles like the SEGA Genesis and Super Nintendo, both 16-bit machines.
Using CD-ROM instead of cartridges, and positioning itself as a true multimedia component for your home entertainment set-up, the 3DO was, in many ways, ahead of its time.
Although it was always doomed to fail, it remains a beloved part of video game history for many.
In Memories of 3DO, host Danny Brown takes you on a journey looking back at the ups and - ultimately - downs of the hardware, the games, and why it was a gaming system that should have shone had things gone slightly differently.

In the week that Facebook came under scrutiny once again, Old Man Brown ponders on whether the blame should lie at Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg, or whether you should be looking at yourself more.
Listen in as he shares his crutchety wisdom in the only way that Old Man Brown can, including unhappy experiences with prostitutes.
Recently, Old Man Brown had to visit the hospital to get some stitches, and it reminded him of the time he had to get checked for a STD when he was a teen.
Being Old Man Brown though (or young man Brown, at this stage), some miscommunication and lack of clear instruction leads to a not-so-simple procedure.
So American rapper Nicki Minaj went on Twitter and warned that her cousin in Trinidad took the Covid vaccine, and got huge balls as a side effect.
(Note: it was her cousin's friend who got the big balls, but never let facts get in the way of Old Man Brown's musings)
So big were these balls, his fiancee called off their wedding just mere weeks before it was meant to take place.
The story made all the news, and even resulted in various governments coming out to comment on it.
In this episode, Old Man Brown shares his take on these gargantuan balls, and what the real story is.
After suffering from severe stress while going through her doctorate, Dr. Alice fell into a downward spiral of alcohol abuse. This continued until she realized her problem, and she has been sober for three years since.
It's this experience that led Dr. Alice to starting the Beyond the Pink Cloud podcast, where she talks to people that have overcome their own battles with substance abuse, as well as inspired others by living their best lives.
Topics up for discussion this week include:
Settle back for an open and honest discussion about addiction, recovery, and what that means to the people afflicted, and those surrounding them.

Old Man Brown has had enough and he's about to let the whole world know about it. From idiotic politicians to stupid anti-this and anti-that, this elderly Scotsman is about to let rip.
Just don't complain about being offended - you can always just change the fucking station!
This week is a little different. As some of you might know, I also run a couple of other podcasts - one, as a host, and the other as a co-host. Today, I want to share an episode from the podcast I co-host, Mental Health and Us.
It originally started out as a solo hosted show by my wife, Jaclyn, and was called Mental Health and me. It shared self-care and wellness tips to help other mental health sufferers and their loved ones cope.
Jaclyn uses her 20 year battle with both depression and anxiety to share what's worked for her, and how that could maybe help you. I personally suffer from mental health issues too, and it's an important topic, and one that I see more of in the podcasting space, both from a podcaster and a listener perspective.
In this episode, Jaclyn shares how a major health scare made her fear the worst, and why it's important to understand how your physical health is important to your mental health.
The Mental Health and Us podcast will be relaunching early October, and you can catch up with other episodes over at mentalhealthpodcast.ca
Next week we'll be back to the usual Podcaster Stories programming - thank you for letting me share this special episode with you.

This week I sit down with Joenrhuz "JR" Tabanda, host and audio producer of the Time Capsule Show, a podcast sharing the everyday stories of everyday people.
Each episode asks six thoughtful questions that guests can use to define their life in the 21st century at this moment.
We wanted to give people hope, especially young people that may feel alone.JR talks about what their goals were with the show, and how that's taken shape, and how the pandemic gave them the opportunity to put these goals to fruition.
We Are All ConnectedJR and his podcast team and co-hosts share the belief that everyone has a story, and that's why they appear on the Time Capsule Show.
We just try and put up stories that are timely, powerful, and help us understand the culture of the time we're going through. One thing they're particularly determined to do with the show is to give the guests a platform, and share their point of view, whether it fits with the hosts or not .
On Taking a Different PathWith a Filipino background, it was expected that both JR and his brother would take a career in the medical profession, or a similarly professional one. But that was a very different path from the one he envisioned.
While he may yet take that career path, for now he's more than satisfied and challenged by the route he's currently on.
Everybody has an opinion, but it's up to you what value you place in that opinion.Heroes Don't Always Wear CapesWhile he'd never describe himself as a tennis player, or even someone that has just a passing interest in the sport from a playing point of view, his all-time hero hails from it.
Rafael Nadal epitomizes everything we should aspire to be, in our personal and professional lives.
People's expectations of you don't mean anything, and if you set your mind to anything you can achieve it.Connect with JR:

So a funny thing happened on the way to getting Season 4 of Podcaster Stories ready - from personal and work life, to guests that weren't really right for the show.
This resulted in the new season being delayed by about a month, which I apologize for. The good news is that Season 4 will be released next week, so I'm looking forward to sharing more awesome stories with you.
There's also an update about the Quite the Thing podcast network that Podcaster Stories is now part of, and is very much geared towards community focus and engaging our listeners, so I'm stoked to be part of that.
Thanks for your patience over the summer, and I hope you've had a safe and enjoyable one. Here;'s to Season 4.
