In this episode, Matt speaks with Brigitta Gruenberg, Food Safety Modernization Act Program Manager for the Idaho Department of Agriculture and Chanel Tewalt, Chief of Operations at the Idaho Department of Agriculture, about the Produce Safety Rule and the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), including its impact on farms small and large.
FSMA is the United States' most significant change to federal food safety laws since 1938. FSMA takes a proactive approach to preventing foodborne illness. It was signed into United States federal law on January 4, 2011. The law is being rolled out slowly so that farmers would have time to implement it.
Specifically, Matt and his guests about a portion of the FSMA called the Produce Safety Rule that sets standards for growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce for human consumption.
Although the final version of the Produce Safety Rule went into effect January 26, 2016, the first large-scale compliance date for large farms began on January 26, 2018. Produce inspections will begin in 2019.
