On today's podcast, we discuss the feature article by Vulture about the future of DC movies under the direction of DC Entertainment.
DC Entertainment feature with Vulture
* Long article, with editorializing mixed in
* Lots of known history of DC Entertainment since 2009 - Movies, TV, Comics, video games
* Interview took place in July at SDCC with Geoff Johns, DC President Diane Nelson, Jon Berg
* Since Batman v Superman, Johns and DC Entertainment began to “earn their stripes” and have been methodical in planning DC on film since then
* Will maintain continuity, but no individual story will have forced connectivity to other stories/characters
* Some movies will be more connected than others, ex. - Justice League vs. Aquaman
* Directors will have freedom within the universe
* The side label, with films like The Joker, will be announced soon
* DC execs had almost no creative input with movies before 2016 (Johns notes for Man of Steel were ignored)
* Berg - “We talk about four things. Heart, heroics, humanity, and humor.”
* Johns and Berg were looking to “revamp parts of” Justice League, and were already talking to Joss Whedon about Batgirl
* Johns - “Everyone was excited about Joss being a part of DC, and we thought he’d be great to write the [Justice League] scenes, the additional-photography scenes that we wanted to get.”; Whedon took over directing after Snyder’s tragedy
* Johns on leaks and criticism of strategy - “Some of the stuff is true, some of it isn’t true. When we talk about things or we’re making deals for people to develop scripts or whatever, sometimes, things leak; sometimes, things are misreported, and it’s frustrating. Because we do wanna go out there and talk about what our strategy is, and this stuff just muddies the water. There’s a lot of internal conversations going on about, How do we help kind of clean that up a bit?”
* Nelson points films are important, but success is important all over
* Titans will be in a separate universe
* Writer Abraham Riesman on how DCEU term came to be - Nobody at WB uses, came from an EW article where author called it “DC Extended Universe” as a joke
