Op 22 maart 2013 wordt Venlo opgeschrikt door een kunstroof uit het museum van Bommel van Dam, waarbij vier kostbare schilderijen met verbluffende eenvoud uit een nauwelijks beveiligd museum worden weggewandeld. De dieven vluchten in een gereedstaande auto met de buit. Een maand later duikt een van de schilderijen op in Londen, en dat is het startsein voor een reeks bizarre onthullingen, waarin blijkt dat de waarde van een kunstwerk mede bepaald wordt door het verhaal dat erbij hoort.
