  • Book Talk: Aidan McQuade on "Ethical Leadership"

Why do decent people in positions of power do dreadful things in certain circumstances? Why do some leaders carve out a different moral path when faced with challenging situations? Why do some people become ethical leaders in morally challenging and complex social environments?

Aidan McQuade, who consults on ethical leadership and campaigns against modern slavery, explores these important questions in his new book “Ethical Leadership: Moral Decision-Making under Pressure”, which is the second title in the new book series “De Gruyter Transformative Thinking and Practice in Leadership and Its Development”.

In an interview with Steve Hardman, Senior Acquisitions Editor at De Gruyter, Aidan McQuade explains how his extensive experience in humanitarian work in Africa has influenced his thinking and understanding of how leaders behave when faced with difficult choices.

  • Digital Humanities - A Science Unto Itself? A Conversation With Valérie Schafer

What does it mean to be a digital scholar? The answers to this seemingly simple question are probably as diverse as the interdisciplinary field of digital humanities itself. To learn more about the ins and outs of the emerging research area, we invited Prof. Valérie Schafer from the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) for an interview.

Valérie Schafer has been a Professor in Contemporary European History at the C2DH since 2018, where she does research on the history of the Internet and the Web, the history of European digital cultures and infrastructures, and born-digital heritage. Previously, she worked at The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). She is furthermore one of the co-editors of the book series “Studies in Digital History and Hermeneutics”.

With De Gruyter acquisitions editor Rabea Rittgerodt, she talked about her own path in the digital humanities, shared passions among digital scholars, cultural changes as well as the importance of preserving our digital heritage in times of crises.

  • Book Talk: Erika Quinn and Holly Yanacek on “Animals, Machines, and AI“

What does it mean to be human? How can other forms of being, such as non-human animals or algorithms, help us understand what makes humanity unique? Such questions are central to posthumanist research, which has been proliferating in recent years across the humanities and social sciences.

Yet they are anything but new: as Erika Quinn and Holly Yanacek show in their recent book “Animals, Machines, and AI“, philosophy, literature, and the visual arts have been fascinated by non-human forms of life and interrogated received understandings of the human for centuries.

Myrto Aspioti sat down for a virtual chat with the volume editors on the challenges of writing a book about our relationship to machines and animals just as Covid-19 hit, forcing us all behind screens and in the sole company of our beloved pets.

    The editors:

Dr. Erika Quinn is Professor of History at Eureka College. Her research interests lie in Central European cultural history, focusing on subjectivity and the history of emotions. Her book, Franz Liszt: A Story of Central European Subjectivity, was published by Brill in 2014. She has also published articles on twentieth-century war widowhood and gender in the Journal of First World War Studies, the Women in German Yearbook, and elsewhere.

Dr. Holly Yanacek is Assistant Professor of German at James Madison University. Her research focuses on emotion, narration, gender, ethics, and the non-human in 19th- to 21st-century Germanophone literature and culture. Her previous research has been supported by grants from Fulbright, the German Historical Institute, and the DAAD, and she has recently published articles in German Life and Letters, Monatshefte, and Novel: A Forum on Fiction. Yanacek co-edited (with Colin MacCabe) the collaborative book Keywords for Today: A 21st Century Vocabulary (Oxford University Press, 2018).
