150 years ago, Norway had the third largest merchant navy in the world, and Southern Norway was home to the bulk of the country’s sailing ships. After the peak years, however, there was a period of gradual decline. The Golden Age was replaced by periods of political and economic crisis, and sailing ships disappeared from the fleet. Steamships were the future.
