Inspector Ikemen series
I have read everyone of Barbara Nadel's Inspector Ikmen series. Once I started, I couldn't stop; they are addictive. The characters change, develop, backslide; new characters are added and we lose some that we have come to know and love but the books are marvelous. I have traveled in Turkey, which may be one reason I so enjoyed the series. Currently waiting for another installment to see what dire situations Ikemen will be placed in and how his intellect and wisdom are put to the test in solving the crime. I recommend this series for anyone who loves detective fiction.
Istanbul/Detroit
I thoroughly enjoy this latest Barbara Nadel. She does an excellent job evoking a sense of place. Curiosity got me to look into Brush Park in Detroit and I found dozens of of photos of the decaying mansions she so beautifully described in this book as well as Melungeons, a group of people who seem to have originated in the Appalacians, whom I also found lots of photos and history. Ms. Nadel does an excellent job of tying all the disparate elements together into a good story.
Dead of Night (Inspecgtor Ikmen Mysteries)
I love Inspector Ikmen and having him in Detroit was an interesting feature for the story. Also learned a bit about Detroit's history. Barbara Nadel does a nice job with the Inspector Ikmen series. I particularly liked it because his "side kick" was hardly in Inspector Mehmet Suleyman was not featured. I'm sick of Mehmet Suleyman and his problems. Where as Cetin Ikmen always rises above this home and personal problems and uses his higher self and intellect to "foil the killers" or solve the mystery.
Change of Scenery
I always enjoy reading Inspector Ikmen mysteries, and part of their charm is the setting in the fascinating city of Istanbul and its background, as well as the people. I did miss that part of it in this book, but I was also fascinated by the picture of Detroit, its immigrants, and the people known as "Melungeons". I will admit that I did not spot the killer ahead of time.
Series is fantastic!
Loved that they did a US one with Inspector Ikman. This is such a wonderful series. The characters continue to grow with each book.
