Great addition to an excellent series

The Joe Hunter series is a contender for the title of most thrilling series. Each book consistently delivers more excitement, better plot and sympathetic characters. There is no doubt that Hunter would be the person I'd call if s*** was hitting the fan. After so many books in the series, however, sometimes protagonists forget they should grow up. Matt Hilton has handled that brilliantly in No Safe Place - Hunter is starting to feel his age. He's packing his backpack full of bricks to prove to himself he's still hard.

The plot of No Safe Place is suitably twisted, with one red herring after another making it hard to decide if I knew what was coming next or not. A woman is killed in a home invasion/robbery, and Joe Hunter is hired to protect her son from further attacks. What follows is a race to find her killer, but not all is as it seems.

Hilton's antagonists are becoming more complex with each book, and the big bad in this book certainly paid off in being understandable but terrifying. I loved the inclusion of a shaggy dog story from Hilton's own policing career. It's these little touches of humour and warmth that raises Hilton's writing above many other thriller series.

Joe and Rink feel like family to me now, after reading of their adventures in the last 10 books. No Safe Place allows them the usual back and forth - the playful banter that I always mention when reviewing Joe Hunter novels is alive and well in this story. I loved that Bryony is back and making Hunter's life more complicated in the best ways. The subtle romance that is woven through the story is slight, but doesn't detract from the main story. Which is just how I like my romance in thriller novels.

The reason this doesn't rate 5 stars is that it felt a little more sparse than usual. The plot wasn't as fleshed out as usual in a Matt Hilton thriller, and it was too short. There was no subplot, and I am attached to having a subplot in these style novels.

If you are a fan of the Joe Hunter series, definitely check out this book. If you like Reacher style novels, try out a Joe Hunter thriller - they're better.

Much better than the previous book, I really enjoyed every page. It's not the usual kick ass adventure, there is more into it. Good book!

THRILLER WITH A FAMILY CAUGHT UP IN IT

HIDDEN IN HARMONY : DANGER IS IMMINENT. by J R Thompson

To find a homeless man on your porch, and no means of communication, is scary. Then to bring him, as a Christain would do when you have a wife and family. Mixed feelings of how this should play out, especially when things bad, start to happen. Interesting, but didn't ring true. Common logic wasn't applied, as poor decisions were mad. Readers will find it a thriller, caught up in trying to do what is right.

Hidden in Harmony is a great fiction book. One of the main characters is thirteen, so while there are mature subjects discussed, nothing crosses the PG-13 barrier. I would definitely recommend it.The author does a good job of creating realistic characters and realistic events, and the narrator does a good job reflecting the different accents and voices of the characters, even using special effects to reflect internal dialogue versus spoken words.Definitely grab this, if you have a chance, and be prepared for a ride!

I don't have a singular memorable moment. There were several different ones, and I don't want to spoil the book talking about them.

Which character as performed by Charlie Glaize was your favorite?

I would say Nikki (Nicky?) would be my favorite character: she has a significantly different accent and pitch from the others, which shows the range of the narrator.

Good read

Crystal Queen by T. Blake Brady was a good quick read. Vanessa and her love interest live from one high to the next. But this just finds them from one bad situation to the next. Vanessa finds herself wondering about her ex-husband and what happens if she was to get clean.

Really good!

I really enjoyed this story! Great narration and a story that kept me hooked from the beginning. I can't wait to check out more by this author.

STORY

CRYSTAL QUEEN is more a collection of chapters rather than a complete, book. For me, this collection of chapters served to lure me unto the exciting storyline only to cut off prematurely, eager for more. From a financial perspective, I cant fault the author for doing this yet as a reader, it is infuriating! Without judging what a tease this, book was, I have to admit that I was fascinated by the drug addicted characters chaotic behavior and felt their fear as they ran for their lives. CRYSTAL QUEEN is well written and engaging.

PERFORMANCE

I listened to the Audible audiobook narrated by Ramona Master. Having never previously listened to anything by this narrator, I didnt know what to expect and was very, very pleasantly surprised by her performance!

Ms. Masters never once read but acted everything out, putting on a stellar performance that was extremely believable.

set in Toronto and Bosnia&Herzegovina - An emotional multilayered story

For a debut novel, this was ambitious but Iâm so pleased the author took that leap of faith as sheâs produced a meaty read and one which is both police procedural, mystery, relevant and historically intriguing

The characters plot and setting are unique â lead character is a Canadian Muslim police investigator, Khattuck, whose recent case turns out to the death of a man who used to be a Bosnian Serb war criminal. So many people from that time must have fled in the same way and are now leading new lives. Quiet, and picturesque Scarborough seems as unlikely a place as any and the contrast between here and Bosnia emphasized a world torn apart.

You can tell this novel is written by someone who not only knows but cares about the subject â Ausma has a Ph.D. in international human rights law, specializing in military intervention and war crimes in the Balkans. I did feel that the novel often read more as an informed text that a novel at times â there is along list of references and document links at the end of the story, after the authorâs note on the background history so there is a sense that this is a novel to be read slowly and seriously. A mystery novel is a good way of bringing a subject like this to the literature world even if the history does override it at times.

Having said that, if this is the first novel, I want to read the rest as the premise and the overall subject matter is a unique one and it deserves a read to learn and gain horrifically realistic insights into the trauma and consequences of a country breaking up and how it affects it people, both then and years later.

This really is a book which makes you think and which lingers long after youâve read it.

What you likely never knew about Serbian âethnic cleansing

This book has haunted me. It was the first of several highly recommended books by Muslim authors. A dectective story, it is so much more. Every chapter begins with an unattributed quotation. When I thought to look a few chapters in, I found the annotations at the end of the book. To my horror most of them were from testimony on Bosnian War Crimes, interspersed with a few excerpts from the Koran and other quotations. As the story builds the full horror of the Serbian âethnic cleansingâ unfolds, as well as the culpability of the western countries in leaving the Bosnians undefended.

Game on...amazing!

An excellently written book loaded with intrigue and unexpected twists. An incredibly intelligent combination of romance, power, suspense, shocking horror, and unpredictability. A.J Arron is a remarkable author and Will Tulin is a master of bringing words to life. The two of them together are a powerhouse that rivals Hollywood! Anyone up for a glass of blood wine should download this...cheers to brilliance.

Not what I was expecting & couldn't get into story

I don't know what I was expecting, but halfway through this book I still felt like the story hadn't really gone anywhere and I don't know, I just couldn't get into the story. I didn't particularly care for any of the characters except for Birdie's brother Brent. Birdie was just, well, naive, being given an Aston Martin, money, clothing, etc and also a place to stay living with these men who were complete strangers, and I don't know. I just didn't like it. I can't really get into the rest without giving away the story, but I'm glad Brent didn't kick the bucket.

That being said, I thought Will Tulin did a good job with the narration and handled the different voices and accents very well. I would have no problem listening to another audiobook performed by him. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

Blood into wine

I absolutely loved the narration on this book, but didn't like the story. The story just wasn't what appealed to me. I love my wines, but blood into wine grossed me out. I didn't like a lot of the characters either, but the narrator was so talented with his various distinguished voices that it made up for not liking the story. I would definitely listen to more books by this narrator.

State Secrets: Bob Skinner

I have read another Bob Skinner book, book 28 in the series. It was a little bit different from others in the series because of where the crime was committed. The Prime Ministers Office in the House of Commons.

It was a very clever story and it isnt until right at the end that it is all finished in a satisfactory manner.

Highly recommended.

Narration again

Narration can make or break break a good story.. The voices portrayed in this were all over the place.. Do narrators not listen to the narrations before submitting the recorded text? Many of the voices are painful to listen to.

Excellent story and superb narration

Where will Skinner go next! I hope to find out soon. Thank you, Mr Jardine.

A Fresh Twist

Initially I was dubious of the book being set primarily in Westminster, the Edinburgh setting is normally one of the key attractions to the Bob Skinner books. However, the change of scenery really freshens up the story and it's great to have Bob back as the primary detective, recent texts have felt a little like he's shoehorned in to the plot. In the end this has been one of my favourite Bob Skinner books for a while. James Bryce excellent as always.

Decent Mystery

I was very interested at the start of 'Sweet Karoline,' but as the book went on I got sort of lost. I feel like I missed some important plot points - how did Anne find out about her long, lost family in the first place? There were a lot of crucial questions that went unanswered for me by the end of the story, to the point where I was disappointed that I hung in there the whole way through. If the story had a faster pace and a clearer plot I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more! The narration was good and helped me get through to the end.

Great once you get going

I enjoyed this audio recording. I had trouble at first. For me, there was too much character development, especially with a few minor characters. Once things get going, the story is a good one with a fun finish.

Not my style

I dont enjoy spending a lot of time inside one persons head. I enjoy interaction with characters that involve real-time conversations, not just remembrances of conversations by one person.

Three and a half stars

Being reacquainted with Hannah Weybridge once again was great. Dancers in the Wind has very much stayed with me since I read it last year and I often just stop and think about Hannah. Sheâs a struggling journalist but also a single mum to one year old Elizabeth. In the first book Hannah just seemed to attract trouble wherever she went so I was keen to see if the same would happen in the second book. And it certainly does! Hannah discovers her friendâs recently murdered body in a church basement. Her friend, Liz Rayman, has recently returned from a stint volunteering at an outpost in Somalia. On her return to London and as a qualified dentist, she was recruited by the local parish priest to offer free dental treatment to those living on the streets. But whilst the priest is absent one evening, Liz is brutally murdered. All of the signs point to one of the homeless people Liz was trying to help but Hannah canât and wonât believe that theory. Tasked by Lizâs mother to investigate, Hannah sets out to discover exactly why her friend was so brutally killed. But what Hannah doesnât realise is that sheâs getting involved in something much bigger than she expects. This goes way beyond the murder of her friend and into darker territory than she ever imagined.

I found the Dancers in the Wind to be quite a gritty, raw read. Unfortunately between the first and the second book something has been lost. Iâm afraid to say that I didnât get that edginess this time around. Hannah came across as a nice, middle class mother who could easily afford to employ a nanny to look after her child whilst she went undercover in Cardboard City for a few hours, only to return to her comfortable home and sleeping baby. I felt as though she had lost a lot of the âstruggleâ which I really liked in the first book.

It may of course be something to do with the friction and the chemistry created by love interest DI Tom Jordan being completely absent. Tom was working in the US throughout much of the story and was only available by telephone. I really missed having this character involved in the investigation.

There is a new DI in Tomâs place for Hannah to deal with but I found her quite contrary. DI Claudia Turner blows hot and cold and I couldnât work her out at all. I hope Tom returns in the next book and DI Turner is only seen in passing.
