Publisher's Summary:
When the body of journalist Jerry Markham is found in a traditional Shetland boat, young Detective Inspector Willow Reeves is drafted in from the Hebrides to head up the investigation. Since the death of his fiancée, Inspector Jimmy Perez has been out the loop, but his interest in this new case is stirred. Markham had left the islands years before to pursue his burgeoning writing career. He had few friends there, so why was he back in Shetland?
Willow and Jimmy are soon led to Sullum Voe, the heart of Shetlands North Sea oil and gas industry. It emerges that Markham was chasing a story in his final days. One that must have been significant enough to warrant his death

Fabulous characters, pace and atmosphere
This is the fourth in the Shetlands quartet, and each one has been a gem. The characters are carefully drawn, avoiding cliché, and the sense of island space, light, wind and salt-wave are evoked lightly as the narrative moves on, gathering momentum. I came to this series after listening to the Stanhope mysteries, which I really enjoyed. In the Vera Stanhope series, the focus is more on Vera herself, and Cleeves has an annoying (Agatha Christie-like) habit of holding back clues to the moment of final resolution. Here, though the Shetland mysteries deny the reader the possibility of pitting ourselves against the detective; the hide and reveal is far less obvious, making for a more satisfying and rounded listen. The interactions of the characters are brilliantly conceived and Cleeves moves point of view at will, rounding out the suite of protagonists. This shared role in moving the story on, also allows these stories to wear very lightly the necessities of modern police procedures. So we know there is a suite of staff manning calls from the public, but it appears in passing, as does the CSI process, which seems to disappear off to the labs leaving observation, interview and imagination, to be the stuff of the detective team. Great stuff.
good listen
I am a massive fan of Ann Cleeves and this book did not disappoint, The story is set in Shetland and the location really adds to the atmosphere of plot. Jimmy Perez has returned to Shetland following the death of his fiancee but is gradually drawn back into the investigation of the death of a journalist. It is a book I would recommend if you love a good murder mystery novel
Another terrific "Shetland" mystery
Any additional comments?
Jimmy Perez is still trying to come to terms with his personal tragedy and so, when the son of Shetland residents returns to the islands for purposes of his own and is killed, Willow Reeves, a senior policewoman, is sent to take charge of the case. Against his inclination Perez finds that he is caught up in the investigation and a story that began years ago unfolds against the background of the lonely, open, windswept scenery that Ann Cleeves describes so well. The narration by Kenny Blyth is particularly good and added much to the story.
Worth a Listen
I enjoyed my first Ann Cleeves novel, it was well woven, though I did get a bit lost sometimes (I feel that was MY fault rather than the novel).
The characters were well drawn, and each had an effect on me - whether I liked or disliked them. The killer was not at all obvious to me so I enjoyed the suspense.
