Nice cozy!

This book is a fun cozy mystery. The main character Samantha is staying at her boyfriends ritzy condo while he was away on classified business. The condos classic drunk abusive couple down the hall are at it again and the wife shows up drunk and naked. After police arrive it is discovered the husband is dead, the wife is the chief suspect. What seems to be an open and shut domestic turns into a bit more when an obnoxious lawyer shows up, strange noises on the balcony occur and mysterious notes claim the wifes innocence are found. Full of pretensious, quickery, and strange neighbors Sam tries to solve the case while reconsiling her relationship with her mysterious boyfriend. The narrator does a great job! I think there may be more books in the series and if so I look forward to listening! I received a free review copy of this book at my request and have voluntarily ledt this review.

Really enjoyed this book

Pluses:

-- Great story line. Had me engaged, and I had no idea what was going to happen.

-- Even 3/4 through the book, I could not go to sleep one night, as I was thinking about 'who did it'.

-- Multiple times, I yelled out loud at Samantha for making bad choices. Other times, I'm biting finger nails.

-- Narrator: ...Like wow... I love her performance. Very engaging, and how can so many convincing voices come from one person. I love how she interpreted the book.

Minuses:

-- I thought for sure that Samantha was going to have a stereo typical scene of running for her life on the fire-escape 13 floors up and needing to escape the killer my climbing down the fire escape. I just knew that her fear of heights was going to come into play. But still, it kept me guessing.

-- Last time I yelled at Samantha was:

--> Come on, be reasonable to Carter, don't be so picky... and eventually marry the guy!!

But overall, I truly loved book!

Riveting Story, Amazing Performance

The story had a perfect mix of intrigue, action, romance, and humor. It had me constantly on edge (I earned the marathon badge while listening). Natalie's performance was amazing! I look forward to more installments in this series.

Great characters

The stand out in this story is definitely the characters, their rich make-up creates an engaging and interesting story.

I haven't read book one, and while I was still able to enjoy this book as a standalone, it was very clear that I was missing a lot of backstory and that knowing the backstory would make a difference.

Very good caricatures and who done it.

A lot stronger caricatures that the other series by this author. Good storyline and caricatures. Like the track of this author's ideas in this series, at the end you end up saying, I didn't see that coming..

Another homerun from rodney riesel

Although When Death Returns is a quick read, it does not leave any action out. Jake and his new "buddy"/partner Lint track down a serial killer with many plot twists along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish. I would love to see Jake Stellar in the movies or on TV!

Good cop tale

Great storyline. Fast-paced action. A good read.

Unlikely Partners. Review by Don.

The boys Jake & Lint up to their eyes again in a multiple murder case, with history. Cracking humour, good plot, a wide and diverse range of character's. Oh, you better throw in a new family member, woofie the pup. The end result, another great yarn in this series. Come on !!! join the fun.

A very good book to read

I would like to recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a very interesting and exciting book where the action never stops. I am finding these books to be very difficult to put down. I will be looking forward to reading the next book from this author.

Title: The Abducted Odessa Omnibus

Author: Roger Hayden

Narrator: Tia Rider Sorensen

Format: Unabridged

Length: 15 hrs and 3 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-14-17

Publisher: DBS Publishing LLC

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective

Publisher's Summary:

A girl's disappearance in a small town leads to a disturbing pattern.

The hunt for a kidnapper reveals a conspiracy unlike anything seen in the small town of Odessa, Texas. Notes left for investigators claim to be from the kidnapper, taunting them along the way and mentioning one former detective by name, Miriam Sandoval. Miriam is then enlisted to help crack the case, but what she finds results in more troubling questions, including dead suspects who aren't working alone. Leaks soon compromise the case, and Miriam is left with the difficult decision of holding back or doing things her way. The clock is ticking, and the deadly game of a demented predator has just begun. Can Miriam solve the mystery in time, or will the missing girls' suffer a tragic fate into the unknown?

Members Reviews:

Two clever loners battle each other, and battle their pasts.

I really liked the story. A couple loners with haunting pasts. Secret rooms. Red Herrings. All made for a great story.

With each page more and more of the story is revealed, not too fast, not too slow. Reading this literally made my heart race at times.

The book was very much worth the time I spent reading.

Reading low-cost e-books has given me a greater appreciation for the work that goes into producing a higher cost book. Obviously, there are quite a few professional eyes on a book before it's released. A self-published author doesn't have access to those resources. I've never written a novel. I can't imagine how tedious it is for self-published authors to pay attention to the technical details of the words they use. This book some flaws:

Homophone mixups.

Missing words.

Wrong names (such as in the One Slip chapter with "...Tara locked safely inside," when it's really April)

All are errors that make for reading "speed bumps" for me. Errors that I don't like but tolerate in order to read the books.

I would have liked for the two Odessa, Texas detectives, and Miriam's fiancé to be a little more developed. All three play a big part in Miriam's inner life. Without development they are relegated to minor character status when they actually have greater roles.

Plot: 5-stars.

Character development: 4-stars.

Proofreading: 2-stars.

Kept my interest: 5-stars.

A minor point, Miriam and her colleagues appear to have superhuman ability to go with no rest while functioning in high stress situations. It's a novel and some suspension of reality is required, but really. Who are these people that can jam a month of activity into 48 hours?

Great book. Miriam Castillo quit working as a detective

Great book. Miriam Castillo quit working as a detective, after being kidnapped by the Snatched. After that ordeal she and her daughter,Ana, who was also kidnapped relocated. Miriam changed her last name and chose to take a desk job. Ana was attending school and going to therapy twice a week. Life was getting back to normal, until the phone calls from Odessa, Texas. Two girls have been kidnapped there and a letter the kidnapper left requested the police contact Miriam. Who is the kidnapper? How does he know Miriam? Dive in to help solve the kidnapping.

Action Packed

If you've read any of Roger Hayden's previous work, you may remember how Detective Miriam Sandoval saved herself and her daughter Ana from a sadistic killer back in Florida.

BUDS-dud

Where does Tequila Mockingbird rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I can read Jesse McDermott adventure stories faster than Wayne Stinnett can write them. So while waiting I stumbled across Finn Pilar, a BUDS-dud. (A failed SEAL.) Paul Brion is brilliant as narrator, enjoyable to listen to, great command of American vernacular. Jesse McDermott has been getting longer in tooth with each episode, but Finn Pilar is fresh, fun, and familiar.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Both Finn Pilar books have had very complex fast twisting plots. Each twist is logically and clearly explained in character.

What does Paul Brion bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I don't read books. So it has to be narrated or I'm not a buyer. Paul Brion is clearly talented, friendly, humorous, and a good partner for Lewis Haskell.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The same thing that makes me like Jesse McDermott stories is working full time with Finn Pilar.

Any additional comments?

Lewis, when does Paul finish taping Kilimanjaro Snow? Divai Bistra (Russian: give it to me soon.)

They will both wish he had decided to stay away. Members Reviews:

Four passages from "Quoth the Raven" that show why Jane Haddam is one of my favorites

Even though this is not my favorite novel by Jane Haddam, it is still excellent. Jane Haddam writes not just a mystery novel; she writes as essay on philosophy in order to make her readers think about their own lives and the world they live in through stories about fictional characters.

Quoth The Raven (review passages)

Passage 1

Those were the days before heâor anyone elseârealized that the man who murdered thirty young women with an ice pick and a cheese board wasnât an anomaly, but the representative of a class. Gregor thought he had been on the job with the new department for five years before it hit him that that class was not only vast, but growing. Somehow or other, this society seemed to be breeding a prolific race of the morally dead.

Passage 2

âThe mistake youâre making,â he told Tibor, âis the same one I made up until a couple of hours ago. People invest their lives in all sorts of things that may seem silly to you or me, but mostly what they invest them in is their own image of themselves. We construct identities like houses and then we live in them. If someone comes along and threatens to burn the house down, we react.â

Passage 3

Next to him, Father Tibor Kasparian trudged along with his hands wrapped into the folds of his cassock, looking infinitely tired. Gregor knew Tibor had been brought up among psychopathsâraised by them, really, except in the tight protective womb of his unshakably religious familyâbut he hadnât expected Tibor to be taken like this by what had happened here. He thought he might have read Tiborâs psychology exactly backward, the way he had once tried to read words in a mirror when he was a boy and pretending to fight crimes with magic superpowers, like Spider Man. After all, what they were dealing with here was not a psychopath, but an ordinary human being who had invested too much in superficialities and too little in inner strength. It hadnât occurred to Gregor that Tibor might find that worse than the prospect of a man who had decided to play out the fantasies of Stalin and Hitler in private life.

He put his hand on the priestâs shoulder and said,âTibor? Are you all right?â

âI am fine, Krekor,â Tibor said. âI am thinking. You are very sure you have this set up exactly right?â

âI think so, Tibor, yes. I have it set up the only way I think it will work.â

âIt seems like a very large chance, Krekor. You are counting onââ

âOn guilt,â Gregor said simply.

âYes. On guilt. But Krekor, I am not sure, in this case, if guilt applies.

Format: Unabridged

Spieldauer: 1 hr and 19 mins
