Book 1

What did you like best about this story?

The Green Pearl Caper provided an intriguing and suspenseful mystery. The readers / listeners of the audiobook soon find themselves smack in the front office of a modest detective agency where they are introduced to Damien and his trusty receptionist, Millie. And so the mystery begins. It is a very entertaining story and a good narration.

Nice Throwback Piece

This takes us back to the New Jersey and New York of the 70s, which was a time of bell bottoms, disco music, pay phones, and platform shoesbut not for the conservative heirs of a tobacco conglomerate. This crew is all kerchiefs and pearls and murder. Following Detective Damien Dickens through boardwalk knockouts; rubbish burials (his own); pawnshop prowls; and the ire of his long time enemies made this listen fun adventure and conjured more than a little worry over the doomed detective. As Dickenss enemies gloat over his misfortune, he steadily mounts clues and garners support from his extremely limited resources. The plot is enriched with a cast of very suspicious antagonists, all of whom have motive to kill. The story definitely kept me guessing as the pendulum swung from hilarity to horror to hope. The real enjoyment is in details I dare not share lest I spoil your fun. My only prickly note is that sometimes the feel of time is closer to the 1940s than the 70s, which is detectable in both in the dialogue and the narration.

The narration is carried out consistently well. Tom Lennon makes me believe hes telling the story. His cadence and clarity are spot on. In my opinion Lennon's tone, as well as the story's dialogues, may be more indicative of an earlier decade than the 70s. This was a bit distracting until I told myself to allow the story to exist "whenever." Once that was done, I was able to relax and enjoy this rather timeless narrative.

A fun detective novel

I thought this was a good start to a series, and perfect for fans of detective stories. The setting is interesting, as it takes place in 1970's Atlantic City. I think it is well-written, easy to read, has good characters, and keeps you guessing who the culprit is. In the book, they reference earlier cases that Damien and Millie worked together, which made me want to know more details.

"Money can't buy happiness but it sure is a start"

I am a relative newcomer to the work of Libby Fischer Hellman so was delighted to be offered an audio copy of her book, Double back to review. And it was a delight. A private investigator is disturbed by the abduction of a little girl who is then returned without any apparent ransome demand. Then the child's mother is murdered. What first appears to be a local financial crime spirals in size to encompass far more ; and as the body count rises, Georgie, the P.I., and her friend Elly Foreman, have to face up to the question, "What happens if the defenders turn out to be the bad guys?"

The story line is fast paced and travels in directions quite unexpected, the characterisations are mostly well formed and realistic, and the whole is entertaining and easy on the reader/listener. The narrator. so important in an audio book, has a pleasant voice, nicely modulated and reads well without annoying ideosyncracies or unexpected pauses.

Recommended for anyone interested in a light but complex mystery thriller.

BOOK #1 WAS GREAT, BOOK #2 IS EVEN GREATER!

Most times when I read (or listen to) a second book or watch a second move in a series, I feel let down because its just never as good as the first. NOT IN THIS CASE... Libby Fischer Hellmann did it again by writing a book that I couldn't stop listening to. I'm so sad to see it end but wow what another GREAT MYSTERY with characters I just love. I want to be friends with Georgia and Ellie! I want to become a detective, investigate and chase after those bad guys. I feel like an inspired child that wants to be a super hero. I have recommended this series to family and friends! I'm so excited that book #3 is out on audio and I'm getting ready to purchase it right now.

A Good Story With Lots Of Action

This was the first book I have listened to by Libby Fischer Hellmann. I liked her writing but didn't have the background on the main characters whom she had introduced in other books.

This book was told from the perspective of both main characters, which took some getting used to for me.

Good story

This is another book that has been on my Kindle for a long time and I finally got around to reading it â sorry it took me so long because it was a really good story. I read a lot of mysteries and police procedurals; this book was a nice change from the big city locations and large police departments that are in the books I usually read. It takes place in the Colorado Flat Tops wilderness. Two men were killed at almost the exact same time in two different, but relatively close locations. Was one of the deaths an accident? The police are focusing on only one of the shootings. They believe the guide (Allison Coil) who said she saw and heard âsomethingâ happen at a different location is just mixed up about where she was since she was a âcity girlâ before she became a guide. While the police are busy with the death, a group known as FATE (Fighting Animal Torture Everywhere) is causing havoc while demonstrating against the hunters. Thereâs a lot going on and the author did a good job of tying everything together.

Dust Gets In Your Eyes

Compelling reading for the most parts, but the behavior of the two major protagonists would have put up red flags in real life and thus for me took the edge off a good yarn. I am sure the storyline could have either have those protagonists have more believable ways of flying under the radar or had the heroine comnnecting dots with them as fast as she did with others. Nit picking maybe but the difference between a four and a five

Good book

If all the books in the series are as good as this first one, Iâm in. I like the protagonist, Allison Coil, very much. All the characters are well drawn, the dialog believable and the plot solid. Part of the appeal is the beautiful mountain terrain which is the setting for the drama. Mark Stevens shows his fine writing skill in bringing those pictures into sharp focus for the reader as the story unfolds. A winner!

Strong female character reluctantly solves high altitude mysteries.

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery based in a part of Colorado I hold very dear to my heart. I especially appreciated the strong female character, Allison Coil. Having grown up on the west slope, the daughter of a big game wildlife specialist and hunting in this particular area for over forty years, I congratulate Stevens for being spot on with the geography, weather, and most of the biology.

I strongly disagree with the reviewer complaining about the narration speed. After encountering the enigmatic Elvie in another Ramsay book, I found it fitting for both the character as well as the overall atmosphere.

Great story, deeply atmospheric with unpredictable characters and interesting twists.

Loved the previous books in this series. Not so this one. Anderson and Costello are on the edge of the story. The narrator is slooooow.

Disappointing

Have listened to the first three Anderson and Costello novels and given each of them five stars. This, however, cant really be called an Anderson and Costello novel since they are minor characters who rarely put in an appearance, let alone solve the crime. Cathleen McCarrons narration would be fine if she had narrated the previous novels in the series but she didnt and its not. Audible, please stick to the same narrator when presenting a series by the same author. After all, you wouldnt go to the theatre and expect the cast to change after the first act would you?

I am so disappointed as I have listened to all the other books in this series and loved them. I lasted thorough the first three chapters but had to give up before tearing my hair out. The story is soooooo boring. Shame on the author.

This was a fun mystery. The fact she can see and talks to ghost make for an interesting life. Love the animals and their views. The recipes were also a fun add to this! It was my first in this series. I believe it can defiantly be a stand alone.

the Moth Catchers

Excellent writer Anne Cleaves. Vera Stanhope her main Character is very different . The reader does a fantastic job, with a very difficult accent from Northern England. This is now a TV series and it is very well done.

Can't wait to get into the next book.

Narrator should be reading children stories.

This is a mystery story, not a light or funny novel. The narrator reads it like a fairy tale, no gravitas at all. It clashes with the scenes being depicted. One gets the impression one is listening in at childs' library afternoon. And yet the words are at odds with the cheerful performance.

In addition few of the main characters are at all likeable; steeped in self - pity and sneering envy. I DON'T recommend this series at all and certainly not read by this narrator..

Slow story and dreadful narration!

I've enjoyed Ann Cleeves' Shetland stories very much so thought I'd give the Vera stories a try. This is my first attempt. I've made it to Chapter 6 but just can't take any more and it will have to be returned.

My main problem is with the narration. The narration parts, which I assume are in the reader's normal accent, are delivered in the fashion of reading to toddlers. When it comes to the characters' accents, the narrator seems to me to over-emphasise words to such an extent that the timing is slowed down and very odd. I have Northumbrian roots myself so have no problem with that accent - but to me this reading made it sound like the characters were simple or had speech defects.

Unfortunately, whilst the story line seems promising, the pace is slow and so it was too tedious to overcome the narration problem. I think this series may be better read than listened to.

Way too introspective

Original plot, nice twist at the end but very repetitive and (dare I say it), plodding. The characters seem to spend as much time contemplating their navels as trying to solve the crimes. I won't be reading another.

Brilliant as always....

I really enjoyed all.of the twists and turns in this one. There had to be a link, but it was well hidden until the end.

Another Good one from Easton

The entire Inspector Pekkala series has been a good one.

I would recommend starting from the first one, but it's not an absolute and I think the book stands on its own as a solid story.

The stories are loosely based on historical fact but I'm not sure about this one. I'll have to do a little research to verify or not.

I always say a book is good if it makes me want to either research or want a sequel, and this one does.

The narrator might be good if I had heard him narrate from the first, but he is not nearly as good at voice inflection as the narrator in previous books - Pekkala's voice is a particular disappointment and it's hard to distinguish who is talking in rapid dialogue scenes. He has a good voice and narrates well so it's not grating in the least.

Overall recommended and looking forward to the next one!

Good tale, poor naration

Where does The Beast in the Red Forest rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This is the 3rd book in the series that I've listened to. It's been a compelling story telling adventure. But this one has been let down by the new narrator. Whoever decided to change the narrator from the earlier books made a big mistake. Mr. Pacey isnt bad, he just doesnt have the same rhythm, range, or style. I had planned on listening to more of the Pekala mysteries, but with Pacey performing, I think not.

Bring back Paul Michael

This is a really good series and I was really enjoying it a lot. Why on earth did audible choose to change narrators in the middle of the series! And couldn't the new guy at least learn to pronounce the name of the main character consistent with the prior three books? Right or wrong, that is what the listeners expect and changing the pronunciation is just dumb and wrong.

Pekkala one of my favorite characters....

Along with Bernie Gunther, Harry Hole, Inspector Rebus, detectives I look forward to reading. Unfortunately, Pekkala doesn't show up in this book for quite a while, nontheless a worthwhile read and it really picks up when he gets involved. I finish these books way too quickly....:(

She needs to listen to Elaine Wise and learn what a good narrator sounds like.

Worst Narrator Ever

What disappointed you about No Hiding Place?

The narration was appalling. My 11 yr old granddaughter could have put more feeling into reading it.

Would you ever listen to anything by M. A. Comley again?

Not if she hires Charlotte Anne Dore to narrate. What a really poor choice.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I felt as if she was reading the story for the first time and had no idea what was going on, so she put emphasis in the exact wrong places. And her voice is irratating to the nerves.

You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I'm sure I could have enjoyed it if I had been reading it instead of listening to it.

Disappointing narrator and weak plot

Every now and then I like to take a chance on a new author and/or narrator. The smart thing to do would be to listen to the sample, which in this case I failed to do. I won't make that mistake again.

To say this narrator's style is wooden would be a generous understatement. I resorted to speeding the narration up to 1.25 in an attempt to make her narration approximate some kind of human speech, but even that wasn't enough. Her slow reading and over-enunciation set my teeth on edge.

And the story isn't the strongest either. It's a police procedural that appears to be written by someone unfamiliar with the genre, let alone actual police procedure. For example, it's hard to imagine the police anywhere letting a family stay in a immediately after a murder has been committed--without having scene of crime officers even examine the evidence or having detectives take statements.

I could go on and on, but I'll restrain myself. I simply can't recommend this book, and in fact wish I had phoned Audible and asked for my money back. And I'll definitely be listening to samples from now on!

Poor narration

Whoever chose Ms Dore to narrate the Conley stories did the author a disservice. Had I not already bought the book as part of the series, I'd not have bothered listening to it. Ms Dore's delivery is often stilted, unnatural and detracts from a good story.

Would you consider the audio edition of City of Ghosts to be better than the print version?

I think the audio and print versions of this book are equally excellent!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot kept me engaged and I didn't want to pause at the end of each chapter! The mystery kept me guessing and I felt submerged in beautiful, historic Vienna.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene is when Jake first meets Anna. The author painted a beautiful scene in a Viennese cafe and set the tone for an intriguing plot. It made me want to learn more about the characters and their potential journey ahead.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me laugh at times. The author's sense of humor comes through, but the overall storyline is more serious and gripping. Why did the main character make the decisions he did? It's like a movie you watch and yell at the TV screen for the main character not to make a bad decision, but they do anyways and you're excited to see what lies ahead.

This is a fun audiobook - a great story and a great narrator. I really enjoyed it!

A thriller in Vienna... Yes please!

I wasn't engaged the entire time, the narrator put me off a bit, and the story wasn't as exciting as the summary had described. Worth a listen tho! The book filled out the vastness of Vienna, and described the character nicely! Can't wait to listen to more by this author!

Enjoyable story

I enjoyed this fast paced thriller set in Vienna. The story and the characters were interesting, and I loved the descriptions of Vienna. Not overly impressed with the ending though, it just seemed too pat. I didn't care for the narrator (Will M Watt) all that much; I didn't think his accent fit the story, but he did a good job with most of the character's accents.
